Railing/handrail for tiny winding stairs?
Comments (4)MY MIL had a staircase like that, and as Kennebunker said, she used a rope hand rail. Is that your only access to the second floor? My MIL's staircase (it was the only one)nearly was the cause of her needing to go live in a nursing home as she became unable to negotiate it when rehabbing a hip replacement. You mentioned g'babies, so it's maybe something you might want to think about before it's an issue. Kid proofing is with gates. I think you could also have fun creating a curved, laminated handrail yourself, once you get some of the other issues sorted out. BTW, I think you water heater is great, just think of all the "free heat" it will throw off! As you get into old houses you might find it very comfortable to pull up a chair and warm your tootsies on the water heater. Do you have a chimney in the attic above that fp? Is there a void where masonry could still be? It wasn't uncommon for fake mantles and hearths to exist when houses were heated with stoves alone. (And you have a stove hole above it.) Comments (4)No need to add anything on top of a corectley installed torch down modified roof with all needed flashing those things are a done deal for 20/30 years or so. We lay 2x acq stringers 16'' on center in the direction of the flow with a strip of modified under them, screw decking to the stringers, not past them into the roof. Dap out the rail posts 1 1/2 x however wide the rim joists is,bolt the posts to the rim joists. The Dap out lets the post sit on top of the decking. Its a good idea to figure out what kind of surface you want to walk on a little bit ahead of time, for sure dont plan on walking on the roof. Not really sure about the siding thing, flashing needs to be behind it and over the top of the roof or melted to the flashing by another strip of modified. Comments (2)You only need a handrail on the knee wall side. If you try to add a tailing on the other side it will look out of place, unless you have little kids and you worry about them climb or walk the ledge, you can put something to prevent that from happening, but it would still be easier to teach them not to go up there....See MoreChair rail ends mid-wall. Want to paint white below chair rail. HELP!!
Comments (25)IMHO, this does not look good at all. I would not except this solution. It looks like you just slapped up a piece of molding. It needs to be integrated more with the existing chair rail and base molding. If you move it over to start under the chair rail, it would be too close to the boxed out trim. If you want it to look like it is meant to be this way, he really needs to move the trim under the chair rail and shorten the width of the box so the spacing is the same as the distance between other boxes. Also, the trim piece should not stand proud of the base piece. You need someone that knows how to rework this to look professional....See MoreD M PNW
