New Wood Flooring Poly Peeling & Scratched
Comments (0)Merry Christmas to us ... this is what we got for Christmas ... SCRATCHES. Our new red oak floors were installed over the summer. We had them finished with an oil base stain and oil base poly and were told that this would make the finish much harder and durable. Unfortunately after 3 weeks the poly is starting to peel around the edges of each of the boards and the scratches are heart wrenching. We do not want to get the same flooring guy in because he ended up having to refinish them twice due to unacceptable stain coverage. We have a total of 3 coats of poly and the wood floors are placed over radiant heat. The floors in our master bedroom are water based finished and over radiant heat as well and are fine (different problem). Does anyone have any suggestions on what we should do? Any advice at this point would be helpful. Thank you. Karen...See Morehardwood floors orange peel appearance
Comments (8)And I'm not a fan of mixing chemicals. In most instances oil can be used over top of water based products...but from time to time it doesn't work. Dry times between coats can muck things up. If TOO MUCH time occurs between coats, then things don't 'stick'. If there is too LITTLE time between coats, then you get lap marks (looks like clear 'stucco' on your floor...looks very rough). Is there a reason why they used oil based as the last coat? Did you want a floor that turns orange as it ages? If this is a problem with adhesion of the last coat (which is what orange peel or fish eye texture indicates) then it is *possible that a screen and coat will work...especially if the finish is fresh. The only thing that prevents this is the MIXTURE of chemicals (water based poly sitting underneath is now contaminated) which could prevent a final coat of WATER BASED finish going down. Or the chance that the oil based top coat does not come off 'cleanly' and prevents the reapplication of OIL BASED finish to have adhesion issues once again. I would make sure your GC brings in an NWFA Certifed Sand/Refinisher to bring this floor up to snuff....See MoreCoretec Flooring. Madrid Oak, Brockport Oak, or Tulsa Oak?
Comments (1)Hey there! We are considering the same three. Did you decide to install any of them? If yes, could you post photos? Thank you!...See MoreHelp! red oak floors pink and white oak cabinets going in
Comments (35)We went with natural red oak - we love the lighter flooring throughout our home - and a contrasting stained white oak cabinet (I think it’s with special walnut). Contrast is more restrained in person and cabs are darker than we envisioned - originally we were thinking less contrast - but we’re very happy with how it turned out! We also have a good amount of white in the kitchen....See MoreHU-500962721
