Arranging furniture in a small open plan space
Comments (5)All I can advise is to look for occasional chairs to set around a central coffee table or among side tables. These are easier to arrange in small spaces and allow movement between them. You might have room for a loveseat, but anything larger will be a wall impeding traffic. The one feature that is absolutely misplaced is the door to the balcony. Had it been flipped to the edge of the room (in blue below) your living room space would be more clearly defined....See MoreNeed help with den furniture placement and decorating suggestions
Comments (6)Any reason in particular why you are keeping the tv over the fireplace? That must be over 8' high. That's some serious neck strain. I would probably recommend a similar layout to the previous owner. It has lots of seating, divides the entry from the living area. The window looks fine with current shutters. If you do not have furniture, start with the rug first. Find one large enough for the room. Use the colors in the rug to guide you for picking out furniture. Artwork and other wall decor can come later once you have the basics. You could always put the tv on a stand to the left of the fireplace. Have fun....See MoreHardwood Den: Starting from Scratch
Comments (10)@Beth H - thanks VERY much for the links. There are some new examples in there I hadn't seen before. I think the sofa along the long wall and two armchairs facing the fireplace may be the way to go. Convertible so I can open up to the kitchen if I want or need to. Maybe leave the french door side open (or bench, more armchairs, hmmm). I appreciate seeing other options for the fireplace. Building 1 or 2 benches on either side of the fireplace would round out a conversation space without plopping an armchair in front of the fireplace. And I had definitely considered the tv on the side as well. Will be reviewing these new pics with my husband for sure. @mimomomy - obviously nothing is final just yet and these 3 comments all steer away from mounting the tv. I'll give that a second thought for sure. Appreciate the compliment on the room and yes, I can definitely post dimensions. I realize that it critical info to decide furniture. @greenfish1234 - as Beth and mimomomy have pointed out too, I'll be doing some more research and designing to better visualize my options before anything gets installed, painted, or mounted in that room. The idea to mount it above was so it can be seen from my kitchen, which is a fair distance away (we own the tv already and it's huge) but a swing arm is definitely a good suggestion. Thank you all!...See Morehow to arrange furniture in living room with view
Comments (13)Your view is fantastic! I like the idea of mounting the t.v. in the bookcase. Perhaps you can add a smaller bookcase to the den and bring some of your books in there if you're going to make it a reading room. I agree with bringing the green chair up to the conversation area at a right angle to the sofa. Perhaps then you could find a smaller cabinet to put under the opening to hold your record player and components. I also like the idea of grouping your plants in front of the small window between the two bookcases. It looks as though you would have room for a longer sofa in the den if you keep the coffee table but add slender floor lamps on either side for reading. If you would like to keep the dining table where it is, consider swagging a light fixture over to it to define the space. I think this space has the potential to have a cozy, eclectic, lived in bungalow feel with just a few small changes!...See MoreRelated Professionals
