Question on insecticides

Which insecticide, systemic, do you recommend for hoyas? I see Mike on here uses a Bonide spray, which has one type of active ingredient in it. The granules have a different active ingredient and the concentrate has yet another type! Which do the majority of you use on your hoyas? This is in preparation of getting rid of mealies prior to coming in for the winter. Thanks....

I have used the original Bayer products containing imidacloprid for more than 15 years; the water-in systemic was called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub (BATS), but it recently changed to BioAdvanced Tree and Shrub - Protect and Feed.

It works.

I usually use it at the rate of 1.5 oz. to a gallon on dry plants.

They also make a spray called BioAdvanced Insect, Disease and Mite, but they recently removed the imidacloprid from it and it doesn’t work anymore on mealybugs.

Imidacloprid is fairly safe for people and warm-blooded pets.

I have tried several of the ”generic” versions of systemic, but did have as good control, so I only use the Bayer products.

The Bonide systemic granules contain Imidacloprid. They are fine. But I have a theory about why they don't work all that well with hoyas. Take it or leave it. The way systemics work is the plant takes up the poison essentially into its vascular system. My theory is that systemics like the granules work better with plants that take up a lot of water. But hoyas are not very thirsty plants so they don't take up a lot of water and therefore don't take up a lot of the systemic from the granules. I think a soil drench type of systemic may be more effective. But I am not sure. I've tried both and neither are a panacea for mealybugs. Especially since I have some very large hoyas that I can't readily spray. So those harbor the insects and just reinfect the others. What I really need is an army of beneficial insects. But no way am I releasing more bugs into my home. So I just kinda live with the mealybugs. I treat the plants that I can spray outdoors, I do use the granules, and I spray and use a lot of q-tips with alcohol.

Greetings from the Philippines. I have been living and working here for about a year. Had to restart my bonsai collection and was fascinated by the black olive (called bushida) here. After killing five or six of them, I got some advice from the experts at the bonsai club of the University of the Philippines. Almost impossible to repot them. If you do, do very little root pruning and retain as much of the original soil as possible. So in about two months when the rains begin again I will purchase a couple and see if that is in fact the secret. Have also discovered that it almost impossible to grow them from cuttings or by air-layering. Seems the only way is to wait for seed to drop onto the soil, and tease the newly germinated plants out and into a rather large pot. Someone if Florida claims to have some success in growing them from tip cuttings in a very damp spagnum moss. May try that as well. Good luck, as they are an interesting tree, almost self creating into a bonsai style. I have however seen several here in semi cascade style as well.

"natural" and "organic" doesn't mean it still doesn't kill beneficial insects. Take the time to learn that there is not a "cure all" for every pest at every stage of it's life cycle. Some won't work if it's going to rain. Some don't work well if it's too hot, etc. Pest management is complex, if you wish to use chemical products, do so responsibly which goes further than reading the label. I looked up the product you purchased, and I don't see any recommendation for also using this as a foliage spray. The insecticide will be taken up by the plants roots and should resolve any insects you have feeding on leaves. (again, your pictures aren't especially clear, and I don't find lacebugs here in this climate...however, the leaf with the tarnish spots does fit the description of lacebug) Since you have the product on hand, it would be better if you just watched more closely for any symptoms of insects on the other shrubs and treat when/if you find necessary, not before. A constant mulch is thought to be the cornerstone of successful rhododendron and azalea culture. In the wild, they grow with a blanket of leaves and plant debris over their roots; while the lower layer decomposes, a new supply is constantly falling to replace it. As this decomposition is taking place, the plant remains are releasing organic acids which help provide the acid condition necessary for maintaining proper nutrient availability, the layer of mulch keeps soil cool during the day, and conserves moisture.

It is important to have the Bt stick to the leaf because it must be eaten to be effective. Cabbages and their relatives have very waxy leaves that repel water. The easiest thing to try is spraying less so that the droplets stay small and don't run off. Just apply a fine mist. This is easier to do if you have a pump-up sprayer that can create a fine mist. If you are spraying with one of the hand-held quart size sprayers, this may not work. There are commercial spreader/stickers that are very good at making the liquid stick to the leaf and you can add these to your spray mixture. These are the most effective. You can also try adding a little dish soap to the mix to make it spread out. This might help, but again, it is important that you not apply so much that it runs off. I don't believe insecticidal soap is all that effective on loopers, especially larger ones.

I agree 100% Kyra. I always felt the same way about the roots.

I just ordered a 4# container of granules from Amazon for $20. That, plus alcohol and q-tips, along with a neem oil spray now will hopefully let the mealies know I mean business!

I've been telling them I mean business for years and they don't listen! If the plants are small enough, I would mix up a bucket with some of the liquid Imidacloprid and give them a dunk. You can put plastic wrap around the soil or plastic bag, then dunk the entire plant upside-down and leave it there for 5 minutes.

I have tried this method with dish soap and alcohol and they still lived. But with the Imidacloprid, death should be more imminent.

The bonide arrived today (I ordered bonide since it's the first one that came up and has Imidacloprid as it's active ingredient also). Fortunately I found my package on the front steps as the mealies were trying to carry it off into the bushes. Lucky for me, they move slow, cause my fast moving days are long behind me now. I wrestled the container from them and still Freddy hung on. Freddy is no longer with us. Tomorrow I'll place the appropriate amount in each pot, then water it in well. Hopefully, in a week or so it will do it's job.
