Furnishing whole house
Comments (17)A friend who has winter homes in Tampa and in Miami and has furnished her 2 winter homes and their primary home from flea markets, antique auctions and yard/tag sales in Florida. She is a decorator. Remember those areas are flooded with furniture because most people who buy vacation homes are from the NE and, they are an elderly, aging population. When they die, their heirs choose not to pay the shipping/freight back to their primary or their own homes because they already have furnished homes and they sell their wares at tag sales/flea markets to avoid the shipping back to the NE and having to pay storage on a place to store it there. Otherwise, many people who buy second homes there, take their furniture, only to realize once they get there that it looks too heavy or NE historical for the warm climate there and they end up selling it. She has a lovely first home and winter homes, and has purchased more than 2000 pieces of white china/porcelain that she displays or uses in the 3 homes. Her 2 daughters will inherit these homes upon their deaths, so she still keeps things up to date and beautiful. She redecorates their primary home about every 4 years and has done so by using flea markets, antique stores, tag sales in Florida. Their home in Atlanta looks like a showcase and much of came from antique sales, flea markets, tag sales in Florida....See MoreAbout to make an offer for my first ever home
Comments (42)"my boss/legal advisor is an experienced real estate attorney with a specialty in construction law, which is why he was so protective of me." I'm glad to read you have someone like him looking out for you. Our real estate buying process was aggravating. We went through the same song and dance about getting surveys etc. If our attorney hadn't done so much of the talking to the seller's people we wouldn't have made it to the finish line. Having said that I'm excited for you! Bet your looking forward to all the 'first' things you will do once you get moved in. I know I did. I took pics of the front of our place each month for the first year so I could compare how it looked during different seasons. I also keep the camera handy when we hire contractors. They seem to pay more attention when I'm taking their pic while they are doing the work! ;) I think it might be useful for anyone we sell to down the road. I also have a file with all the repairs, contractors, warranties handy so I can see what has been done, will need to be, etc. Crossing my fingers for you that the closing will be smooth....See MoreFurnishing a vacation home
Comments (13)We built a 4BR/4BA second home in CO. and ordered all the furniture from a local (AL) furniture store. They used to have an annual half price sell, even on special order. Once everything came in, they sent a truck to CO for delivery. Everything else was bought locally (there), adding art and special pieces the first few years. DD1 moved to San Francisco for college, taking only two suitcases of clothing. We shopped at Shabby Chic (her favorite store), meet a very helpful sales associate there that gave us a few leads on local antique stores. Target was also her friend. Also Macy's. It was hard not having a car, but doable. He delivered a table and the rest we got home in taxis. Purchased mattress via phone from Macy's before moving and had it delivered the second day we were there. Took blow up mattress with us. I spent a week helping her get settled. When DS moved to Chicago for college his apartment was furnished at IKEA, Wal-Mart and Target. DH and I drove him there and took bedding, a desk (flat box), his personal items and dishes in the SUV. There was not an inch to spare. His building had a unit you could rent, so we did that for two nights. We made two trips to IKEA and spent almost two days putting together furniture. The leather sofa was delivered the day DH and I headed back home, after helping him for five days. I'm glad DD2 staying closer to home. The older two stayed in their cities for 10 years, but are back in AL now. With the internet, it is easy to find out what's close to your new town. Ask associates when you shop for ideas. Part of the fun will be exploring and finding interesting accent pieces. I would try to find a local store that sells off the floor, or a consignment shop, rather than ordering major pieces once you're there. If you're going out to stay a month or more, you can order ahead so that things are delivered when you're there. Good luck with your adventure!...See MoreNeed advice decorating a new Craftsman home with current furnishings
Comments (8)I don't think you can go wrong with narrow builtins around the fireplace, under the windows. The space can't really be used in another way, and having storage is always a plus. Think carefully about whether you want closed or open storage, or a combination. I also think the soft green you had on your accent wall would look great in your new dining space. Greens always look good with wood. If the dining area has a lot of windows, you could use a deeper color. I'd keep the rest of the main spaces one neutral color. You can use the third option from your builder for a different bedroom color, which I think is always nice. I'd make a floorpan with actual dimensions, and measure all your large current furniture pieces. That will help you see whether or not they can fit in the spaces, or if you should sell them prior to the move. I wouldn't buy anything until after you're in. If your hutch can't fit in the dining area, you may be able to use it on the far side of your living space, across from the fireplace, in an entry, or another room....See MoreMrs. S
