Wet & Forget or Alternative for Exterior Mold, Fungus

Not sure what forum would be best, so the KT is getting this.

I find that Amazon won't ship Wet & Forget to us. We'd used it and a similar product a few years ago to remove 'tree pee' from a section of roof and mold on stucco. Now we have some green mold on the same stucco and on some limestone trim. I can't remember the name of the other product; think it was orange. I also want to know WHY this can't be shipped to us (Illinois). If it's a toxicity problem, I need to find another solution for my problem. (I think we'd tried household bleach without much success. )

Chisue, I think the two local hardware stores carry Wet and Forget nd have curbside. Or I could pick it up for you!

Cheap solution - get yourself a pair of latex or any household gloves to protect your hands. Dip a piece of paper towel into rubbing alcohol and try to wipe the stain. Second option - 1:3 bleach to water solution. If it is some kind of mold - you will kill it, if it is a salt accumulation - you will be able to remove at least some of it. I agree with you - if it looks yucky - you do not want to display your beautiful blooming violet in it. What you can do - just repot it to a plastic pot with wick with the size that will fit your ceramic one. Soak the ceramic pot - top and bottom in a strong bleach solution until all the stain is gone. You can drill a bottom hole in an upper part of a ceramic pot and use the bottom part as a water/weak fertilizer solution reservoir for the plant. I promise you - if you use the light soil Barbara mentioned - you would be amazed how well it works plus you can always disassemble the contraption - and clean your ceramics squeaky clean. Physan 20 is a good preventative for powdery mildew and a mild fungicide for orchids. It has a couple more brand names with the similar active ingredients - I think Consan is one of them. I.

Debbie, The Lysol spray will not harm your leaves if used correctly. It will, however, mar the blossoms if it gets on them. For this 'mold', lift the leaves and spray from as close as you can get with the spray. You will have to move around the pot, doing a little area at a time, and spray onto the mold. You can also use Lysol if you had powdery mildew; you can spray from about 12 inches above the plant and let the mist settle down onto the plant. This is to avoid the cold spray from marking the leaves. I also will sometimes spray into a very small container so I have the liquid, and 'paint' it onto the affected leaf with a q-tip. This seems to work a little better for a small area. If you had any kind of a syringe, you could also use this method to spray the mold on the top of the soil, being sure all of it is covered by the liquid. Cinnamon? If it is to prevent rot, this isn't necessarily a rot situation. I'd be more inclined to go with the Lysol. Barbara

This pot does have two fairly large holes in the bottom, as most bonsai pots do; so the pot is definitely able to drain as necessary. I do agree with you all though; the soil is inappropriate and keeping and I haven't like it since after the first week of putting the Fujian Tea in it. I just looked through the different bonsai soils I have. I do have a small amount of a tropical/sub-tropical mix leftover that is recommended for Fujian Teas. Do you think I should swap the current soil for this tropical mix now? There's not enough left in the bag to fill the pot (if I'm lucky, it might fill half the pot), so I would have to mix it with whatever potting soil my mom has leftover, which would probably end up being soil like what is currently being used. Though, I do have a bonsai mix that I bought for a couple Junipers I had. Maybe, instead of half tropical bonsai mix--half inappropriate potting soil, I could do a mix of half tropical bonsai mix--quarter conifer bonsai mix--quarter inappropriate potting soil. I kind of want to put some of that potting soil in the mixture to prevent the plant from becoming too dry. As Al mentioned, the Fujian Tea likes to stay at least a little wet; if I forget to check up or am unable to check up on it for a few days and it becomes too dry, I can basically just kiss it goodbye.

Hi jgirl,Your doing it the smart way not roofing until after stucco.Out here,in order to insulate and dry wall, it has to be roofed and lathed, but cant be stucco'd until after drywall. I dont subscribe to the theory that hanging drywall will knock stucco off the walls, but that's what the county wants in the order they want it, so we gotta do it their way or the highway. We will face the chance that the stucco crew will slop on our shingles.They seem pretty professional in the way they lathed the house cleaning up after themselves and we asked them to be careful with the roof. They said that's a standard practice on all their projects to keep the shingled areas covered and they come highly refered to us, so i hope it works out. The route you are taking is the best route,imo. Scratch/brown coating is the first two coats of cementious based coats that are applied before the acrylic color coat. The scratch coat is applied rough, then the brown which is smooth and corners formed,(bullnose in our case),and somewhat smooth.Those two coats are allowed to sit for 30 days to allow for cracking, then the color coat.We are going for an old world texture.Best of luck on the rest of your build.

I think Lowe's carries Wet & Forget along with other products for mold removal. It's also sold at Walmart and I would imagine it's available at many other stores as well.

I can't imagine why Amazon won't ship it to your state, they ship other liquids and this is not a highly toxic substance.

Wow! Ask and ye shall receive! Thanks. I couldn't understand the 'no ship' either. We'll just go get this or the 'whatever' comp stuff at the hardware store. (Thanks a bunch bpath, but we're OK picking it up.) Sounds like we aren't the only homeowners using this product.

carolb -- Not sure. I clicked on two different sizes of the concentrate. Each offered subscriptions to get it every three months. (Fortunately, we seldom need this!) When I selected just one jug without subscribing, the notice came up that they couldn't ship 'to my location'.

Read labels and compare. Wet and Forget has the same ingredients as more highly concentrated swimming pool algaecides. I use Utikem 50% Algaecide Concentrate. Set hose end sprayer to deliver 5 oz of algaecide: 1 gallon water. (2% solution)

Wet & Forget is nothing unique. It's a basic quaternary ammonium disinfectant found in hundreds of products repackaged with slick marketing. Don't be fooled.

ci_lantro -- Thank you. Is Utikem 50% a powder? What quantity would I put into water to make two gallons? That's plenty to brush onto my stained stucco and limestone trim. (North-facing parts of our house, above well watered garden beds -- hence the mold.)

No, it is a liquid. 5oz: 1 gallon yields about a 2% solution, so 8-10 oz concentrate to 2 gallons of water.

Would OdoBan do the job for you? I used it to get rid of mildew in my guest room a couple of years ago. I think Raven recommended it here because it was used after homes had been flooded in Texas. I think I bought mine at HomeDepot, but Amazon sells it.

Yes, OdoBan would work, too. The active ingredient to look for is alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride.

OdoBan contains 2% of the active ingredient so would have to use it straight out of the bottle/ no dilution to duplicate Wet & Forget. So it is less expensive to find a product with higher concentration & add your own water. The higher concentration also allows use of a hose end insecticide sprayer which is so much easier to use if you have a large area to treat. I have one that has a dial adjustment. (Some of those sprayers limit you to 4oz: 1 gallon; some will allow 8oz: 1 gallon.)
