Flooring Design Dilemma

Base moulding at the stairs

So we bought a house with carpet on the 2nd floor. We replaced the carpet with hardwood and also has the base moulding re-done in the process. But now, where and stair molding ends and where the new floor moulding begins looks really weird. Does it look normal to you guys? Should I ask the carpenter to fix it?

You often see strange juxtapositions like that but no, it doesn't look good. And it's as much the fault of the older part as it is the newer.

I think you will have to brainstorm with your carpenter and sketch some things on paper to come up with a good solution.

I tend to also agree with annz; though in this situation, I think it would look lovely to paint the added mouldings the same as the wall color and leave the trim alone for now. Similar to what scoobyruby did when she repainted her dining room and painted all the white picture frame mouldings the same as her walls. It's a more subtle look that would work well with the stained trim. I don't think it's a given that the ceilings could be raised; there may well be plumbing routing through them, In any case, that would be a significant project, and more than they want to take on or can afford when there seems to be many other more pressing items to address. Since the trim looks old, I'd think about it seriously before rushing into painting it. Esp. as it looks like there is a lot of other work to do as well as cleanup from the PO's shabby attempts at updating. Once your painted the trim you cannot go back, plus it's a lot of work; so I'd suggest they live in their house for a while, work on other things first, paint, wallpaper removal, etc. and see how it looks once it's cleaned up; then decide.

The size of the molding is also contingent on the house style, room size and it's age. I have a 1949 colonial with 8 " base molding with a shoe molding at the bottom. Ceiling only has a picture hanging molding(1 1/2"), no crown. New kitchen addition will have a 4 5/8" maple crown with a rope insert. You want the crown molding to be proportional to the room. Ron

You may want to post your question on the Home Decorating forum. I think you'll get a lot more response. The base molding often matches the trim around your doors and windows and crown molding color can vary depending on the wall color. Posting pics of your cabinets and flooring will help. This is called a raked return. I think the biggest issue you're going to have is the the bottom section wasn't left long enough to be able to miter the corner. The tops section could have been finished by coping. You're going to need a very skilled finish carpenter to fix that for you.

@HALLETT & Co. thank you! Looks like we need to extend the stairs molding until it's the same hight as the floor molding. Hopefully we can still find that molding somehwere!
