Will Mystic Spires Blue Salvia survive?
Comments (4)I'm in Sierra Vista, AZ and also just planted the Mystic Spires in full sun, mostly clay/alkaline soil. We aren't as hot as you here, but the intensity of our sun is more due to the altitude. We have another salvia from this same family and it loves it here. Good drainage is a must with these salvias, and ours prefer a gravel mulch of about 2". Soil should be amended with a garden soil mixed in with the native soil and some gravel or sand about 2-3" below the depth of the rootball for drainage help. Water it 1/2 gallon every other day for the first 2 weeks, then 1/2 gallon twice a week (preferably dripper) for the summer. In winter cut this down to only 1/2 per week and leave the fallen leaves to help mulch the plant if a frost hits. Don't panic if it doesn't start coming back until April if the winter has been cold. Enjoy! :)...See MoreImposter mystic spires

Comments (8)The picture was from 2 yrs ago,but got the plant 3-4 years ago.I bought a victoria blue yesterday. They had indigo spires also.I don't think was indigo spires, but the victoria was darker blue as well& the foliage of mine was lighter than victoria.I also think she told me If I liked this one and wanted a taller version indigo spires would grow 2-4 ft tall. I found these pictures from 2005 It was not blooming in May& was not in the July pictures. Our Rotti....she had puppies.her puppies we're destructive. We kept a boy.Duke.He's STLL destructive to my garden. He may even have been the one.(And I'd bet& win!)Its a daily thing.I've even beat him with a cake pan(it was already in hand)He just don't get it about my plants.I have a fence around my pond..it looks redneck, but it works& have barbed wire on my chainlink fence THAT he got...in the spot it got him in.I have a had a living rose topiary that he's lept over so much knocking the cane about(broke its stick(s)) that the rose died.I now grow MG up it....See MoreSalvia 'Mystic Spires Blue'
Comments (2)Salvia Mystic Spires Blue (S. longispicata x farinacea) sounds like Indigo Spires to me. Do you know the source of this hybrid? It might be a new cross or some nursery might have simply rebranded Indigo Spires to enhance marketing potential. I've seen this go on with S. guaranitica. Indigo Spires does not set seed as far as I know, based on my own experience, the experience of a lot of botanic gardens and nurseries I visit, and any posts I've seen on the Salvia groups on Garden Web and Yahoo. If you are lucky enough to get seed, these will be F2 hybrids, which can vary all over the spectrum from one original parent to the other. See my thread "Saving seed of New World Sages" for your last question. It's on the second page of posts. Good luck! You will do better in a more Mediterranean climate than a subtropical one....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
