Hi Everyone! Do you have your fall garden started yet?

I am waiting impatiently for my fall flowers to bloom. I got a purple firespike this year, and can't wait to see the red and purple bloom together. My hibiscus have started to bloom again. They did not bloom at all during the deliriously hot summer! My brugs did NOTHING all save for one in the courtyard, so I'm taking all the rest out and I'm sure they'll be eaten up by nematodes. My forsythia sage didn't even grow this year, as many things didn't. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm taking a lot of stuff up and putting it into pots to try to revive them. Some I've already dug were eaten up by nematodes and had to just be tossed away, causing unintentional downsizing.

Hi DG!

'Garden' for me is veggies, and mine is still a mess of weeds/grasses, waiting for me to clean it up and plant my cool weather crops. It's been raining daily, so I have a good excuse.

I have started tomatoes - bought the seeds on Amazon, and hoping they come true, because I cannot get my favorite variety (Tomande) any more - all the seed companies no longer have it. They've sprouted, but are very stringy right now, since I haven't been able to put them out in the sun yet.

Our yard is a jungly mess as well, since it's been way too hot to go out there and labor. I have pots and pots of things that need to go in the ground yesterday.

This has been a tough hot and dry year. So thankful the rains have finally come so I can take a break. I let the sweet potatoes take over one raised bed and planted grains of paradise, african potato mint and guinea arrowroot (which is supposed to repel nematodes in the other beds. Been trialing cedar bay cherries and some other fruit to see how it grows. Seems like its getting more difficult to find fruit that like my area. Not enough chill hiurs for some, too cool for others. Not throwing any vegetation out, it is all being used for mulch.

My naivete is showing, when I read tomncath's comment about the potgrowers, I actually thought s/he meant people that grow veggies in pots! LOL! I am thinking about a little greenhouse for this winter, or maybe just adding hoops made from cattle fence over my 4 x 8 raised beds. These can be covered with heavy plastic or freeze cloth during the winter and then shade cloth during the summer. They can also be used to grow vining crops. I build things, and I am planting groundcovers, trees and shrubs so they don't totally fry trying to establish in summer. I am in San Jose, zone 15-also without rain but all winter long. I have been nursing my frost-hit citrus tree babies, and I am still harvesting raspberries from these crazy Italian bred ever-bearers! I built lovely wood cages to support these berries, five foot long rectangular boxes with cross members to support the canes, and stuck some finials on top of the uprights. Also filled out the under planting of alpine strawberries. I am making a grape arbor next weekend to span my driveway. I am installing solar powered light strings to give nighttime enjoyment- this garden is surrounding the kitchen door entry yard where all friends and neighbors sneak in to help us eat dinner, so I may as well make it pretty :) I am planting apple trees in a cordon along the driveway- opposite the berries- and considering chamomile and creeping thyme to carpet the ground- it's all wood chips from previous owner and I have to go slow as I want to install some stone pavers but only can afford two at a time . I am trying to make the garden areas look established and formal, my house turns 100 this year and is in a very visible urban neighborhood on a busy street so I can't have a tangle of dead tomatoes or blue tarp shade structure showing . My potager surrounds my driveway and side entrance and is very visible from the street. Hundreds of people walk by daily and I gotta show off! Anyhow, that's my winter, happy to read of others actions for more inspiration! Pea

Found leaf roller type caterpillers IN my kumquats. Hand picked for now (fun) and am debating a spray. I don't have any Bt on hand, so I'm pondering neem. Found a small anole on another kumquat. It was evening so he was tucked in for the night. Would like to think they are out there looking for those cats. I think I've seen them eat moths, so that's good. My other plants get patrolled by the small wrens, but they don't seem to check out the citrus. If the turtle could climb, I suppose he'd take care of those cats. The cats are quite speedy, but also if that turtle, actually. Very, very few frogs this year. Very unusual. I need to review the specifics as to what benefits these have: ProTekt (or similar) , foliar kelp. For a 'strengthen the plant' type approach.

I am, obviously, in Ohio. I got m EDL last year, in April. I do have a passport, but I took EVERYTHING that was listed, including the registrars copy of our marriage license, NOT the fancy church one, as it instructs us. I had everything in a manila envelope. The lady only looked at a few things, but mainly used the passport. Then was required to have someone else come and verify her work. DON'T assume that a passport alone will be enough. My DH's was refused. And he had to have verification of most everything also. He went the next day to a different office, and they accepted his passport. I asked why it hadn't been accepted at the office I went to, and the explanation was that if anything had been keyed in wrong, they couldn't change it, that it would kick it out of the system for 24 hours. I asked both people who helped me, separately, and got the same answer. My girlfriend has been widowed twice and divorced once. She had to find all of the documentation from all of them. I do not plan to fly again, but can still be called for jury duty to a federal building, and you never know, I may have to fly again, even if I don't want to. At some point, I will probably let my passport expire, but who knows. I need to check and see when it expires!

DG, I think this dry and hot summer has been especially hard on our gardens. Just keeping them watered was exhausting. Lets hope the fall will be kinder to us.

Carol, I know what you mean. I have pots of fruit trees that I keep potting up until I find that perfect spot and they just need to get into the ground! And the heat this year has made it almost impossible to work. On the bright side I found a blueberry that doesn't need chill hours so decided to try them and see. Hope springs eternal :)

Carol, I'm going to try some greens this fall, but I don't have enough sun for much else. I had a community garden bed, but I guess I wasn't working on cleaning and planting fast enough for them, and they kept bugging me about it, so I just gave it up. I don't have time for control freaks in my life

jstropic Well, we're getting the rain now, at least here in Gainesville. Like every year, when the rain comes, I'm both happy and aggravated. We Florida gardeners are a strange lot. We pray for rain, then curse it. In the summer, we can't wait for fall and in winter, we can't wait for spring. But through it all, we get to garden year-around, so not so bad.
