Need help with garland!!
Comments (16)I have a fireplace that is open to both livingroom and familyroom, so two mantles to decorate. Tho they are quite narrow, darn it. Last year was the first time I'd tried draping the garland down from them. I used fishing line! Its so thin it easily slid behind the mantles at each end, and I tied it to the garland. I was even able to slip a piece down the middle of the mantle too, to keep the garland from sagging more than I wanted. It worked great for me. I'm very concerned my little trees, or at least some of them, won't get to come out this year. I'm not sure I'm up to keeping the "Orange Re-Decorator" from climbing them (knocking them over I should say) or playing with the ornaments. sigh. What was I thinking getting a teenage kitten during the holidays??! I am going to hang several wreaths and decorate them heavily with ornaments I think. I usually have two small ones in the house, and then two on the front porch. Right now I'm wishing I had a giant one for inside in lieu of a tree or two. hugs, Karen "When life gives you lemons - turn it into lemonade, then mix it with vodka."...See Moredo you use silk floral?
Comments (27)amysrq and I are on the same page! Actually, anyone with cats who feel it is their duty to destroy any live plant and I are on the same page .... I love plants / flowers but our (indoor) cats have all decided that we don't deserve to have them. You know, even an inexpensive $17 orchid needing to be replaced every week adds up ... and pisses me off. As I wrote boopadaboo in a different thread, I decided to stop yelling at and squirting (with water) the cats and find some artificial plants which look good. Artificial Plants and Trees has wonderful succulents / tropicals (I am in love with echeveria and protea and ginger, so that's what I have from them) and I'll be damned if they don't look just like the real thing. Amazing. (They are currently offering 15% off, but you'll have to call them to activate the discount -- their website isn't able to do it.) And from Silk Plants Plus I have the most realistic orchids I have ever seen. You seriously have to touch them to know if they're real or fake. The golden Vanda in particular is breathtaking. We have birds of paradise from Save-on-Crafts and again, they are incredible. I have also kissed a lot of frogs, and there are some real duds out there. I'd say for every winner I've had at least two duds -- hello Salvation Army / Goodwill! (where they go when they leave our house) And they don't have to be expensive. Last year I got suckered into Diane James' silk flowers by Town & Country and boy have I been disappointed. They look fine, but they are exorbitant! I have nearly identical peony arrangements, one from Diane James (and which was ~$300) and another from Fiori Belli for about $50 and, you'll have to take my word for it, they are absolutely comparable in appearance. But to me, that's a significant price difference! Would I rather have live plants? You better believe it! Like someone wearing a fake diamond, I know the plants are fake and that "hurts" me a bit (allow me the hyperbole). But you know what hurt me more? Not having any semblance of flowers / greenery in the house OR having them and being frustrated-angry with my cats. Now those hurt me. I think my life will have to be with artificial plants / flowers because I cannot imagine a life without pets. Luckily, I can and do garden like crazy and both my little children enjoy working in the garden as well. So I get to scratch my itch that way and have a good time with the kiddos a la meme fois! (although the wild bunnies like to eat some of the flowers -- there's always some animal eating my plants!) (lynninnewmexico -- I love that photo!)...See MoreFloral arrangements
Comments (16)I still use faux floral arrangements, but I have more greenery than fowers~don't use the bright green stuff. What I try to find is more olive-y or sort of brownish. I also have a gold chenille sofa(great room)and the weave is a herringbone pattern, not distinguishable until you've 'studied' it awhile. I've used stems of small ivory sprays rather than any large flowers, along with the greenery mentioned above. On the same round table i've used 3 large ivory-ish rustic candle sticks(Tuesday Morning). The candles, also ivory, are from pottery barn, and look like they're burning with it's realistic flame~$50 apiece from PB, but worth it! All ivory lampshades and ivory silk pillows with a bit of gold bring it all together. I found a set of antique books with ivory covers that I display in the French secretary with screen doors along with a collection of small topiaries in whiteish urns, as well as a few small pictures and other books. All this changes for winter when I switch out lampshades/pillows to black, as well as adding 2 large black urns w/topiaries to the mantle. I also tried a cobolt blue which looked very pretty. I had a few pieces of blue/ white pottery that I brought in, and the art in the room also had some of the color. I didn't keep it for long since my thought process was to keep the color scheme uniform on the first floor, and wasn't sure I liked it that much. It can be a little challenging in trying to choose a color, but I found the ivory to be easy. ;)...See MoreBest faux evergreen boughs
Comments (10)I wouldn't bother with Balsam Hill. Their prices are pretty steep and I was not happy with some things I ordered from them a couple of years ago. Think you can do pretty well if you look around at Michaels or HL and just use a lot of it. I also found some nice looking pieces at a local floral shop that weren't too pricey & were a bit unusual....See MoreRelated Professionals
