It seems very strange to me
Comments (6)It is a strange bloom season. MA, with cool temps and very little if any sun for the entire month of June. July starts and we have a couple of days with sun and then Bingo back to cool temps and pouring, pouring rain. Plants blooming? Not much in that department for sure and my WS seedlings have been stunted at the tiny, tiny stage. Course the store bought ones that my neighbor bought, look more dead than alive after all this rain and cool temps and no sun. So what makes the gardens strange this year? For the last couple of years have noticed my well established hostas, no names for them, just divisions of a neighbor's 25 years ago, have gotten their flower spikes earlier and earlier every year. Usually I don't see them till August and it takes till almost Thanksgiving to get the seed pods ripe. This year they where growing in June and starting to bloom before July 4th. Last year and the year before it is July when the stems started and blooms in July. Hydrangeas are starting to bloom before the 4th of July, not mid July on. Daffodils bloomed late, crocus where late, snow in summer where no blooms. Iris where early and didn't last as long. To top it off, the 4 legged critters are busier than usual. Exceptionally busy rabbits all over the place, very bold, actually digging nests and birthing offspring right in the middle of flower beds under perennial dianthus. Squirrels see to be collecting nuts early and they are on the ground early and the infestation of the neighborhood groundhogs seem to be very, very confused. They are either demolishing the gardens or just sitting outside a fenced in area and just doing nothing. And to make everything worse, the deer that we normally see only in the winter, feeding on my rhodies and my neighbor's spreading yews are having a feast on my hosta leaves, hosta stems and the daylilies. Comments (16)Ceresone - I have some potted blueberries too. They're only in five gallon pots (maybe smaller) It's those foam ones that look like concrete. I've had a Sunshine Blue that way for a few years and just put it up against the south side of the house in the winter with no extra mulch or anything and it does fine. It's in the shade there from our balcony which might help it not to leaf out too early in the spring. That is my plan so far for my two new ones, Chandler and Ozark Blue. I think Ozark Blue may be the least hardy of those three so I should probably give it a little extra shelter. I have some bigger containers to move them into in the spring. I've been trying to decide what to do with some grape starts that are only in gallon pots. I've been debating whether to plant them or wait until spring. Same with my pawpaw seedlings that are in two liter bottles and some salvia guaranitica that I rooted. The Jupiter Grape that I planted this spring doesn't look very healthy to me. Hope it makes it through the winter. I picked hazelnuts and my second round of Sakata Sweet melons this week. Do you all think this cool weather and rain will give us some good fall colors this year? Comments (24)TGIF.....and I REALLY mean that! I got home from the GENESIS concert at 1:30am, and the alarm went off at 5:15am as usual. I am exhausted from the Tuesday charity event where I got to bed at 1am. Too much late night for me. Phil Collins wanted all the "old people" to shout last night...he had about 50,000 of us screaming. Too funny! QOD: Nothing but chores so far. Tonight DBIL is coming over for dinner (and to help DH with our master bath which is still not completed). I plan on crying a bit more over my beloved METS who are falling apart. Tomorrow I hope to get the scarecrows and such out on the lawns and get to the garden center for a few mums and pumpkins so that we can finished decorating the outside of the house for fall; inside is completed. Sunday we will chill in front of the TV to watch the JETS, and in between I will get some more cooking finished for the week. OK, gotta run to the grocery. I took this afternoon off as vacation. After some errands I'm going to take a nap! Make today count! Check in DeeMarie PS: I was invited to join a committee here at work for our holiday party. It will be attended by 40o people and they want an "80's prom" theme. I remember the 80's well but was older than my teens (ahem!!!). Any suggestions welcome. Comments (7)A week ago we were sweltering in temperatures over 90 degrees and 100% humidity. Which probably doesn't sound so bad to those of you from the south, but up here in New England, where most houses don't have central air conditioning and were built to keep the heat in, not out, it was miserable. But the past week, the humidity's been lower, the nights have cooled off to the low 60s and high 50s and I feel like a human being again.
