seven son flower, how close to house?
Comments (8)Thank you all for sharing your pics and information about Hept. mic. I've had mine now for about 4 years and while I'm still not entirely thrilled with the form, it is getting better. I'm going to give it one or two more years in its current spot and if it doesn't shape up then she's getting moved. I think one of the keys may be that she may have too much exposure (no sun protection at all). I think she would do a bit better with a little less sun. Also, she doesn't seem to like overhead watering. I've worked hard to prune her for optimal branching over the past few years and now I'm just going to let her do her thing. Last year I planted a Clematis 'Vino' to climb through her and that is already working very well. The butterfly pic above is especially encouraging. Best of luck, fellow SSF growers!...See MoreKnow much about heptacodium? (7 Sons)
Comments (13)Mine has about doubled in two years. I got it at a plant sale, was about 4ft. Now it has tall center shoots at about 9ft, about 6ft wide with nice arching sides. It came from a nice nursery, had been pruned well before I got it, so haven't trimmed it yet. I expect it to get fair size, though I may trim it back some if it gets near the 20ft some say is possible. It seems to be happy, looks nice in full sun until mid-day. I like the peeling bark in winter, as I walk by a couple times every day. I also like the shiny green leaves and bright white flowers. I thought the late, red calyx would be more red, one of the reasons I bought it. They are pretty, yet are not extremely bright red, as I somehow expected. Best appreciated up close. I had not seen this bush anywhere in person before purchase, just heard good things about it....See MoreHeptacodium miconioides
Comments (14)This is my first year with heptacodium. I bought a tube of it from Forest Farm back in the spring, after someone on the forum told me how fast they grow. She was speaking truth. When it arrived, I potted it into a one gallon. By summer, I put it into a five gallon pot, and now it desperately needs to go into the ground. It is amazingly fast growing. Also amazingly floppy. I tried tieing some of the branches to a stake, but that doesn't seem to be working. It may just be one of those things you have to let grow awhile and study it until the right leader makes its appearance. Its fall color is nice too. Big plus....See Moreheptacodium miconoides seven sons -wind
Comments (14)I'm in SW PA, it came from same zone... I don't want to put it in back where I had one before due to soil/drainage issues... I don't want to move it (again, had to twice, buried too deep, then roots twisted.... I have a very small but BARE front yard and have stupid LOW power lines which limits me to a full exposure in elevated area... but great soil... and room for the tree. It was tattered when I got it from wind, I saw no smaller one, this is about 4 ft (maybe smaller) but in price range, with healthy roots. No room behind to break wind, besides, it's facing directly west /gets east and south).. mad_gallica, I can't FIND a freaking EG windbreak, something things don't work for me (I kill, diseases) and most need wind protection... plus budget, big time..issue.. If it's going to look too tattered (it already is but that's partly from me/nursery/car home)... I can move to shadier (much in back) but that would involve some pretty rough clay crappy soil... near where the other died, and poor drainage (I can't ammend on that side, other side prone to flooding, middle taken up by struggling magnolia.Unless I ammend all summer (don't think i can) and plant it in the middle of the freaking yard... or under the power lines where it would then need judiciously pruned (by me) ... I hate to do that... ideass?"...See Morearbordave (SE MI)
