Wall to Wall Carpet Shopping

As part of the ”flood-ish” I had last week, one carpeted step got wet, wet enough for ServPro to rip out the carpet and padding on that one step. Ripping out that one step causes me to have to replace the carpet going up the stairs and into the bedroom at the top of the stairs.

Eight years ago when we built the house, I installed a frieze/frise (I can’t determine the correct spelling) rug going up the stairs and into the bedroom. I never really liked it, but I was having decision fatigue so I followed the lead of a friend who had frieze/frise/frisee/frisbee carpeting. Now I get an opportunity to change it.

This is the set up: There is a door in the back hall. Open it and there are stairs that go up to a bedroom/bathroom. There is no door at the top of the stairs. Whatever carpet is on the stairs also flows into the upstairs guest bedroom. I prefer carpet in this area for sound dampening. The upstairs bedroom is used exclusively as a guest bedroom.

I think I want a flat weave type carpet in a light color. I know wool is the most durable, but once again I bump into the ”I’ll probably move in the next 5 or so years,” so I don’t think the expense of wool is justified.

I am not and will never be a ”shoes off in the house” person. If my guests choose to remove their shoes fine but in our region it is odd. And I really wish they would not. It just causes clutter by my front door. All that to say that whatever carpet I choose will need to be fairly stain resistant.

I’ve thought about wall to wall seagrass, but it is pretty nubby for a bedroom where people will be walking barefooted.

I need suggestions. At this point I’m open to almost anything. I’ll post some pictures of what I have in mind in the comments.
