Lesson learned?
Hoping for some guidance! Two months ago I bought a 1955 era bungalow, the kitchen is shown here. Not original, but quite functional for the most part. Because I have some higher priority things to take care of to ready the exterior for winter, I decided to just do a little freshen up in the kitchen to sort of make it “mine” on a very small budget. Basically, for now, that means cabinet hardware and paint, and probably a dishwasher before too long.. I found some great pulls and knobs from Top Knobs that have a sleeker look than the ones shown here, that defy looking clean.
I matched some SW paint to the cabinets and painted out the butternutty color on the soffit yesterday… and the kitchen looks bad now, making the backsplash much more noticeable without the warm color above to balance it out. Unfortunately, this is the one paint color that is not among the cans of paint left by prior owner, so I can’t just order more without the color name.
Could any of you offer some color choices that will either put me into the ballpark of the previous color without looking too harsh, or a different color family altogether that might make it a happy little kitchen again? Ordinarily, I think I have a fairly good eye for color, but this one is stumping me. As I was pulling color chips at SW the guy there just gave me a fan deck(!) but that’s almost too much choice. Suggestions welcome, and limited to paint color for the soffit, please.

Comments (27)Stage Rat, thanks so much. I googled it and that is what it is. I will go right out and dig it up. I don't want those in my flower beds. I wish all my flowers looked that healthy though. I forgot to mention lesons learned about which containers worked best for me. My favorite is the round containers that I get cakes or cookies in (also an excuse to buy them). I make newspaper pots, and they are so much easier to plant out than to try and get the babies out of a milk bottle or 2L bottle. I think the newspaper helps the soil also. I tear off the top as I am dropping them in the hole so that they don't wick away the water. All of mine that were planted that way are doing the best. Also, I put a small water bottle in the center and use plastic shower caps (16 for $1) from the dollar store on top of them--it works great. The second favorite is the 1/2 size stem table aluminum pans from Sam's. The shower cap fits on them also with a small water botter to hold it off the babies. Comments (45)Work with a talented KD. Interview many KDs, and it will become clear who the true professionals are. Make all of your decisions beforehand so you can make the tradeoffs (ie, busy countertop OR backsplash?) consciously, before you are backed into a corner by prior decisions. Don't cut corners on the foundational items in favor of "bling." Think of what features you will really need and use rather than being sold on the latest "must haves." i know many on this forum downplay the usefulness of a KD, but ours was the key to making our kitchen everything we wanted. If the refrigerator was represented as being under warranty on the ebay web page for the product and that information is false, you should follow up with the seller or contact ebay for help. I'd suggest you get BSH's warranty rejection in writing. If all else fails, take BSH to small-claims court. @Dorys Prentice "The issue that kills me is that most of these Ebay sellers say that the item comes with a full manufacturer's warranty..." ebay sellers are not intentionally misleading buyers. The seller most certainly didn't know that there would be a problem with BSH's interpretation of the warranty. @mishmosh "I do agree with you about Ebay sellers. last yearlast modified: last yearthe corresponding molding at the ceiling to align with the molding UNDER the soffit [ at top of the cabinets] would be worth getting installed. Getting that trim out , then painting the white looks more integral. the butternut would have been left If I werent going to finish the trim out.....but the trim out is going to do quite a bit.......

then the color wont matter as it will be white and look to be part of cabinet rather than wall/soffit. Being a traditional kitchen with the nice window...thats what I would do and then probably get a nicer fixture above the window......heres 2 different styles of lights above sink.....the older trac fixture you have ....altho OK in some ways, isnt doing much for looks...a nice spot to place an upgrade.

last yearI, too, would paint above the cabinets the same color as the walls.
What I think would make a big difference is covering the backsplash. My choice would be either a peel and stick wallpaper, of even easier, this product from home depot. Do it in the brushed stainless look to go with faucet, fridge, etc.
