Design Dilemma Exterior Remodeling

We are adding an addition to our home and as such will be putting on a new roof on the whole house, and some new siding which means I’m totally rethinking the entire exterior design.

I’m stuck. It’s a Ryan home. My husband is dead set on black metal roofing. I’m not in love with it and trying to work it in. He wants the WHOLE roof in black metal.

What would you do to this exterior to update it and put some wow factor? Any ideas about color and texture much appreciated. I’ve seen all the white farmhouse with black metal roof ideas and they are ok, but I don’t loooovveee them. Thought?

Assumably ’Ryan home’ is a production builder somewhere in the US? Is there some particular attribute of a Ryan home that should be taken into consideration regarding structural/exterior changes?

Wow, thank you little bug for the quick response! We're in Missouri too! Yes, the tree was leaning toward the house so we had it cut down right after moving in. I agree that the driveway is too much. We are hoping its in the budget to remove a large portion of it and create a c-shaped driveway with a landscaped berm in the middle to add a little privacy from the road. It is a private road with only a few houses, so not too much traffic! Thanks for giving your opinion on the gable, that helps a lot! We do tend to hang out in the back because of the pretty view. That's part of the reason for the remodel, to orient the main rooms more toward the back. It's south facing in the back and has hardly any windows on that side. Living room is currently in front of house, and bedrooms/bathroom on back side... Thanks again!!

This is exactly why architects are worth every penny of their commission. Consumers, drafters, CAD operators and builders simply have no sense of design or aesthetics, much less various architectural styles which may be applicable. What we are left with here, in this thread, is cake decoration. Should there be a bump-o over there...a notch-o over here...a gable...a hip...what sort of decoration would look best, please! And the consumer doesn't even know the depth of water she's in... Not going to end well...

I agree, there is way too much brown. I am thinking about the following: 1. Have flat areas (gables) pitched to same as rest of roof 2. Repair and paint soffit, fascia, stucco trim boards and gutters a soft white. 3. Replace Windows with white vinyl. 4. Paint Stucco a smoky taupe color. 5. Redo the front porch roof to be pitched the same as the second story. I am working on a design and will post it soon to get opinions. Like Save

Thank you again everyone for all the help you have provided. My wife and I couldn’t be more appreciative for all the advice. At this stage, I feel like we have the following...remove railing, install potted plants/feature on side landings of stairs, paint porch a dark gray that matches the stone walkway, replace exterior lighting, remove interior window shutters, revisit landscaping options, install window planters. In terms of the exterior shutters and door colors...the current color is a dark maroon/purpley color (has to go). Based on some of the great feedback I’ve attached a couple options...1) High contrast black on white with a pretty brown stained door 2) Lighter shutters with a brown stained door. I think I’m leaning a bit more towards the high contrast black on white...thoughts on either and if brown is the way to go for front door or match color of shutters? Also color of planters under windows (same brown as door)?

The white "farmhouse" look is a trend that will date those houses in a few years. What color do you like? That should be your starting point.

I would also research whether a black roof will make your house hotter in summer.

Even my husband who is not architecturally educated can identify a Modern Farmhouse style house. It's such a specific style that as @cpartist says, it will end up being dated sooner rather than later. Mass produced subdivision colonials may not be special, but they are in a sense timeless in that millions of them have been built and millions of people happily live in them. A black metal roof strikes me as being very impractical. How long are you planning on living in this home? Anytime you make a non-standard design choice you risk alienating a large segment of buyers. Also, in order to completely execute the MF look you would have to replace your windows with black ones.

The trim around the front door can be changed to something less colonial and maybe since you're going to have a builder putting on an addition you could add a covered front porch. I hope you're using an architect for your addition. If so, ask them to spec out a front porch. Then you can side the house in a different color. Maybe DH would compromise on the roof (medium gray shingles are the most popular and versatile roofing choice) if you did white siding. Keep the black shutters - they add interest. You would then have a lot of choices for a front door color, or just use black if that's what DH likes. Good luck - it's always hard to get two people to agree on everything. :-)

I love metal roofs but not black usually unless going the MF look. . I think the addition needs to be shown to get some idea of what the house will look like with that added . You should have so drawings from the architect showing the new house with addition . Post that here right now there is no way to help. I have no idea what a Ryan house is so maybe explain that .
