I have performed manymany unsuccessfull pollinations on the flowers of H.papilio, besides some FEW which I obtained.... ...many viable seeds from: With pollen from diploids, ...SOME viable seeds among numerous empty "flakes": Using pollen from Donau and (Donau x Ambiance) respectively ...and "flakes only" (with pollen from Orange Sovereign, Apppleblossom and other tetraploids). There was no case of subsequent sulking regardless to the mentioned results. The production of seeds is something with occurs at the very periphery of the plant and according to my opinion does not exercise a dramatic "distant effect" (into the respective bulb) apart of signalling to transfer a certain amount of storage materials into the respective stem which carries these developing rather small fruits. Howdy Peanut, That picture is of a seed bearing fruit. It should hold a combination of membranous tissue, pulp, and inside the pulp sacks... seeds. Depending on which Passiflora it is, and what it was pollinated with, it may or may not have pulp and seeds. In some cases the pulp is edible. Are you familiar with passion fruit flavoring? If you've been to Hawaii, you've probably had a mixed drink with it. It looks from your picture like it is a caerulea-esque Passiflora, so there will likely be very little if any pulp, and what is there is generally not very tasty. However, the seeds may or may not be viable. Tough to tell without knowing how it got pollinated, or if it even did. It may be one of the self-fertile ones. All of my camellias have bloomed early. I have a white powderpuff that often doesn't bloom because the flowers come out in late January and are usually hit with a frost or freeze. It is now in full bloom and has been for a week or so. My purple firespikes are now starting to bloom; this is about a month or two early for them. My Cape Honeysuckle usually has a few blooms now if it there hasn't been a freeze. It has been in full bloom for about six weeks now. Also, my porterweeds are still flowering. This is very late for them. They decline quickly in cool weather and shut down entirely with a freeze. Now they are still in full bloom mode. Very unusual weather, but it is going to change soon.

Hmmmm.... Lobed triangular fruit.... How about Diploglottis diphyllostegia? Ungnadia speciosa is a good guess, too.... Still think we will need some flower & leaf closeups.... It may not be a CA native tree. And your shots are good for growth habit and the unusual fruits/seed pods, but not good enough for positive ID for which we'd need a good closeup of flowers and some leaves.
