Exterior paint suggestions, please!

Hi, Houzzers!

This house is so cute inside, but the paint is dreadful! To save costs, I was thinking of painting the hideous blue shutters and windows black; siding a light shade of gray; burgundy or red door; awnings, I have no idea! Yes or no? Suggestions, PLEASE!

Any paint job will be an improvement...... it is reading a dark lilac despite the electric blue accessories! Test out some black on the trim work and see how that goes.... the black might tone down the lilac and could be an attractive combination, saving a full paint job.

I would keep number of colours to a minimum otherwise it's going to look very 'cluttered' visually, because don't forget, you also have the roof colour adding to the facade. Black is a great idea for the windows/shutters. I'd suggest the awnings stay the same colour as the sidings, and if you want to add some colour, maybe the front door. But before you paint the front door, step back, look at the house and see if you like the door being a different colour or if you want it the same as the windows.

There are literally thousands of colors and shade variations to choose from so it's really comes down to personal taste. We just picked our color on our new construction. We are in a woodsy setting and are big fans of earth tones to blend the house into it's surroundings. We have Hardiplank siding and chose the timberbark color (a Hardiplank color) The sample looked like a taupe brown but once the whole home was painted it looks much darker. Keep that in mind. It's pretty dark but it's growing on us. I'm told it will probably lighten up as time goes on as well. If it were me, I'd try to blend some earth tone shade with your beautiful stone work. Good luck

The flat trim board under your windows will cause leaks if it was not flashed properly or if the sill nosing doesn't project and overhang enough for an effective drip (in the traditional manner). Sealant/caulk at that joint is only temporary. I've seen this detail cost owners a lot of money so make sure your contractor knows what he's doing. One solution is to add a projecting PVC sill nosing in place of the flat trim. It's difficult to beat the traditional double-hung window sill design. Here is a link that might be useful: ATW

Someone in a recent post painted their garage doors a faux wood paint treatment and it looks great. If you can’t buy new wood doors, maybe you could try painting them. I think wood would look nice here.

Remove the awnings , if you need sun and heat protection do solar shades inside those awnings hide 1/2 the house.IMO white is the wrong color for the house you need to respect the stone and the roof both of which to me say go a light taupe . Also the gargae the same color . The steps and handrail need to be darker and not white storm door , in fact if all you need the storm door for is a screen remove it and get a phantom screen then do the front door in a color that you like depending on the taupe you choose.

Remove the the awnings and shutters completely. paint the vent above the door tge same color you paint the siding.

as far as color, your house can handle a variety . i personally find grey boring especially with the gray roof. Blue,s, greens yellows would all work on your home.

I would keep the awning over the door, although, it does need a good cleaning. Its very practical in that area. The other awning, needs to go. The house is smaller, so I would paint it white, and trim that is dark, but, not quite black. A very dark charcoal, would be nice. Once all done, some landscaping in the front and colorful plants, and it will be adorable. A small, size, but comfy chair on each side of the door, (colorful), would be nice if they would fit there. If not, two oversized pots full of pretty flowers, would be a nice touch.

Pale grey or white would be nice for your house. I would remove all the awnings and install a nice simple white pergola above the front porch. I don't know what material you presently have on the porch floor but dark brown wood planks for the flooring and steps would be a nice touch. Small shubs or perenials (or combination) would be nice for your landscaping

The blue shutters and trim are truly dreadful. Toss the shutters - they’re so small and look cheap. I agree that at least the awning over the window should go too.

It could be a charming home with these minor improvements!

Lots of potential! I agree with removing the shutters and awnings. The awning over the one window hides how cute it is.

What styles do you like? With those elements gone, you could go in a cottage direction, a more modern style (mid-century inspired, but not MCM, I don’t think), etc.

Landscaping changes would make a big difference, too. I really like Lisadv’s mock-ups.
