Good Online Nursery to Buy Different Species of Herbs?

Are there any online nurseries that specialize in herbs? I found one nursery that has many varieties of Thyme. I would like to find varieties of Rosemary that would be both good for culinary use and also look nice grown in a container.

Living in California, I can't imagine that you could not find a decent selection of herbs at any better local retail nursery. My nursery carries multiple cultivars of mints, thymes, sages and rosemary plus a full selection of other common herbs.

I have never done a side by side taste test but IMO, any rosemary cultivar is well suited for culinary use, even the prostrate forms generally grown more for aesthetics than for culinary purposes.

Most rosemary will grow quite large and outgrow anything but a large container rapidly. 'Roman Beauty' is a cultivar that in between an upright form and a prostrate one, stays quite compact and grows slowly. It is an excellent container subject.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) I put Roman Beauty Rosemary on my watchlist. Monrovia and San Marcos Growers claim to have it but do not appear to grow it currently.

So far my selections are as follows. Maybe someone sees problems with these:

Everleaf Thai Towers Basil

Greek Basil

Trailing Rosemary

Berggaten Sage

Golden Leaf Sage (variegated, with a taste profile similar to common Sage)

English / Lemon Thyme

Orange Thyme

I'll be doing a review for Bethlehem Nursery shortly. I'm tempted to list them as four stars for value as Dennis provides exceptional plants for a very affordable price. That said, the plants are generally 1-3 years old, so again, it's hard to call them a bargain either. I think the lack of four or five star ratings in value is more attuned to what miniature and dwarf conifers are - premium garden plants. Most trees and perennials grow fast, are easy to propogate and attain a sellable size very quickly, whereas conifers take much longer and more pre-sale care. I think if I was rating the nurseries on a bar against eachother, there might be more five star values, but taken as a whole, conifers themselves are expensive plants. It's all about how you see things. That perennial you pay $8 for may be gone in 5 years while that conifer will be growing into it's pleasure years. Twenty years from now, most perennials are long forgotten, but that conifer you spent $40 on is now your gardens most amazing plant. In this regard, as long as the conifer was healthy and not too poorly shaped, all conifers provide excellent value, last most if not all of your lifetime and provide decades of good looks. -Will

Has anyone had experience with Hostas Direct? I'm waiting on an order from them, and after some of the posts I've read, I'll be looking at my shipment with a critical eye. There are 3 features of their website that swayed me to buy their products: 1. Many Hostas are available in 3 different sizes - starter (rooted tissue culture starts), advanced starter (about 2X bigger) and mature division - so you can get a small Hosta for a small price, or a larger Hosta for a reasonable price. 2. They have several cultivars for less than $5, and they are not always the smaller sizes for that price - sometimes you can get a mature division. 3. After placing a $50 order, I got a free Hosta of my choosing (from a list). I chose 'Stained Glass', which is a newer Hosta. They were swift in sending me an order confirmation with an invoice number, which not all online nurseries do. I also like their website. When you are looking through their selections, you can sort by name, price, rating, bestsellers, etc. And you can search by color, 1st letter of the name, sun-resistant, slug-resistant, AHS rating, etc. They give detailed information about each Hosta, listing everything from leaf color to leaf size, number of vein pairs, lineage, plant size, etc. You can do a side-by-side comparison of Hostas. They have a shopping cart and a wish list. My wish list is full of Hostas that I intend to buy next month, in $50 increments. So far, I am really impressed, but like I said, I am still waiting for the plants to arrive. I would appreciate anyone's input on their experience with this company. bejoy2

think it will be tough to find herbs, other than the run of the mill you mentioned, in brooklyn/manhattan, and if you do find, the chance of them delivering is virtually zero. there is a decent garden market called the terminal on foster avenue in brooklyn- and between the various vendors, you many find one or two outside the run of the mill selection but not many, and you will probably have to wait till the middle of may for them to be in stock. different plants are best planted at different times, but generally speaking, early spring and and early fall are good planting times. if you buy herbs in the seed form, you can go online and buy an almost endless variety of herbs for only a couple of dollars each. this works best if you have a little space and grow light to start them off indoors.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (rareseeds.com) is where I have bought many herbs. They only have the one rosemary selection at the moment though, and you may not be interested in starting from seed. They have a ton of basils and these are easy to grow.

I love thyme and the orange sounds great to me. :) I think lemon balm is a pretty plant and it grows well in a container.

I just have the regular. There's one called limoncello which is supposed to be even more lemony, I may get it sometime.

There are also variegated versions if that is what you want.
