Furniture placement for small living room

We need to purchase furniture for a small living room area. Front door opens straight into the living area on the left and kitchen/dining on the right.

I need comfortable seating and a TV. The couches will not be there—and I don’t like how they are situated anyway. I want seating to face the tv.

Should we put the tv on the large wall on the right and not the one straight ahead?

I would put the tv in front of the windows - on top of a long, low console -

or alternatively, I would use use a tv lift cabinet - or convert a console/cabinet with a lift mechanism.

The lift would be my preference, so as to have the option of hiding the tv - and being able to just have a console on display in front of windows, sans tv at times. But either way - a console with or without a lift - would work fine for me.

So if I wanted a sofa directly facing a tv in this space, that is the way I would do it. I would anchor a 3 seater sofa on the wall, put a tv in front of the windows, and some type of swivel chair facing the fireplace.

Please post a to-scale drawing of the room, complete with windows, doors and other openings-it doesn’t have to be fancy-you can use graph paper. You’ll get meaningful help then!

If you put the tv on that large wall, you will get sun glare from the window.

You need a larger tv, but it should not be larger than the fireplace.

Do the barrel chairs swivel? You can add a mechanism to them so they'll do so if you love and want to keep them. I suggest you consider a reversible chaise sofa so you can relax and stretch out on the chaise portion while hubby enjoys one of the recliners. Since the chaise can be flipped from right to left when you want to rearrange, it is very friendly to re-configuring the space when you want. Here are a couple of styles. Depending on how far back you can pull pieces from the TV, you could flank it with the swivel chairs, place the sofa where you now have the recliners, and place the recliner angled by the window. Once you get the arrangement down, use painter's tape to tape out a virtual rug on the floor. I like them to slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa and extend past the ends by at least a foot or so. If your "rug" isn't a standard size, go up to the next standard sized one as you shop. Are you planning for drapes? They would add a lot to your space.

If you want to convey the idea of separate spaces, you could use one big rug for your "office" and another for your "living room". I am not a person for rug decisions, but plenty of posters here are! Yes, to some bookcases on the wall with one picture stuck in the middle. You could get tall bookcases with cabinets below. Put all the loose messy stuff into the cabinets, so the room looks more spacious. You might even be able to get pull out file drawers for the bookcases. No doubt Ikea could fix you up with these. The bookcases need to be tall, since everything else is pretty squat. Add some conspicuous plants so the room seems more alive.

Here is a layout for your room. This layout creates a 'foyer' for your space. When you enter there is a console table or cabinet against the wall with a mirror or art above. This cabinet can be overflow storage from the kitchen if required. The three seater sofa divides the foyer area from the living room space, it faces the TV that is placed on or above a console on the opposite wall and there are two lounge chairs added to form the conversation area. This provides an area for adults and children to exchange ideas and watch educational shows and movies together as a family unit. Place art or wall decor above the fireplace and adjacent to the dining table. Children grow up to be adults. Plenty of children were raised in homes that didn't turn their homes into a gymnasium. No ball playing in the house. That is an appropriate activity for outside. Balls leave skuff marks on the walls. Homes are created for the total family and not at the expense of the adults. OK, I will get off my soapbox now but you get the idea.

Unfortunately I’m not able to create a to-scale drawing. We haven’t moved in yet and I don’t have the measurements. This is all I have 🙁

Get the TV off the FP it is way too high for proper viewing. How many seats do you need ? Since you are not in there IMO wait until you are before doing much. IMO the TV on an articulating are on the left of the FP would be an okay spot and honestly get solar shades and srapes for the big window put the TV and a wall of storage TV and a bit of display on that large wall but it all depends on how many seats and also is this the only space you can put the TV in?

If the room is at least 11 feet wide, I would lean toward putting the TV on the wall on the right, because above the fireplace is a ”no” for me. You might have to close the window covering if you are watching TV during the day. You might need a more shallow sofa under the window depending on the width of the room. The sofa may need to be snug against the wall, so the window coverings would need to fit inside the window like the blinds do in your pic.

I think my previous living room was 11-1/2’ wide and that was the arrangement I had. Not ideal, but better than the alternatives.

TV on the right wall on a console that is at least 25% wider than your TV. Look for small scale furniture. No big, puffy, rolled arms, etc. Appropriately sized sofa on window wall and 2 swivel chairs that can go on either side of TV. Instead of a coffee table look at a C table

It looks like you have a few options depending on the measurements and how big of a TV you are wanting. You could potentially put the TV to the left or right of the fireplace over a console. If you don't want to do this you could easily put the TV over a console in front of the window and have seating facing that.
