Where can I buy a large olive tree--6 ft or more?
Comments (1)Good question. Always interested in any olive discussions. I wasn't in a hurry and bought 'Arbequina' and 'Arbosana' as twigs. They do grow pretty quickly. My 'Arbequina' is now as high as the 4' fence behind it after a couple of years:...See MoreOlive Trees: How to Cost Effectively Reduce Olives and Pollen
Comments (9)Not seeing how major pruning by a contractor every so many years into perpetuity is an economical choice. And if you have turned them into pollards or otherwise severely pruned specimens then the charm of the natural shapes has already been lost - maybe plant some more suitable kinds of trees among them, cut the olive trees out after the new set is of some size. Otherwise they should probably be trimmed frequently, maintained as formal specimens instead of getting whacked back hard at longer intervals. Every time they are forced to regrow most of the top that was present at the time they are drawing on nutrient reserves in the trunks and may be gradually becoming diminished by the repeated assaults. There is also the possibility of trunk decay developing due to the large pruning cuts being made. For planting near swimming pools you want plants with large parts that do not get sucked past filters. As you have described olive trees are probably about as bad a choice as one could come up with....See MoreCan I grow Osmanthus Fragrant, olive tree in New England?
Comments (30)Am I missing something in these posts? Why are people ordering Osmanthus fragrans from websites outside the country? I can go on almost any U.S. mail order nursery site and find Osmamthus fragrans available in sizes ranging from a 4" pot to five gallon size pots... And every size in between ... All for a reasonable cost and reasonable shipping charges. I myself have an Osmamthus fragrans I ordered last spring... And it was delivered safe and sound to my doorstep three days later. It is currently blooming its head off....See Moreis this tree dead? or can i revive it?
Comments (16)Mine is shorter, with long fronds. It isn't easy: I held onto one, twisted it around as though wringing out something wet, again and again. Too cheap to hire someone. [Now it's too tall though.] Check this, just for info: Dead brown leaves / the skirt hanging from a palm tree doesn’t hurt the tree; in fact, they help shade the trunk from strong sunshine, and will provide bird-nesting sites, but they can be a fire hazard and sometimes harbor yellowjackets. If you trim a palm’s skirt, don’t do it in the summer; the fierce summer sun will scorch the previously shaded trunk....See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
