Summer pruning fruit trees in Phoenix?

I'm growing an apricot tree in a container. I'm going to try the 'little fruit tree' method to keep it small. This approach advocates for summer pruning to keep the size small (in addition to winter pruning, which stimulates spring growth). However, we have particularly brutal summers here in Phoenix. I'm worried the tree will not respond well to such pruning. Has anyone in Phoenix (or a similar climate) tried this? For reference, our summers are long, hot, and dry, with daytime temps regularly hitting 110F and nighttime temps frequently staying above 90F.
