Cannot figure out replacement shades for this medusa lamp. Please help
So, I figured out this is called a medusa lamp, and what bulbs to get to it. For 2 weeks I canNOT find this right replacement shades. I see a bunch of horseshoe shapes that seem way to small and would leave space at the base. I am looking to spend no more than $40, so willing to go plastic (eergh).
Info:
- Bulb: E12 Base, B11 C37?? 40Watt Dimmable (I know nothing about lights)
- The Mouth is 4' wide and the broken shade looks ROUND (70s style)
- There is threading where the shade would be twisted in I guess (I can tape it too, lol)

Comments (15)I would not add anything that sticks out much into the walkway on that long wall...people's shoulders will whack them going by! And at the risk of horrifying everyone, I see no reason why you shouldn't paint the three walls of your kitchen a different shade from everything else, if you want to. A warm gold-toned tan would give a good backdrop to the things you want to use, and make the kitchen into a space of its own. I would also pull the ledge off the pass-through and add a generous countertop supported by big iron brackets on the family room side where your family and friends could sit while you are in the kitchen, and that you could use as a serving surface or bar. That would solve your no-table problem in a simple way. Since you don't have a window, your big wall is the ideal place for a really big mirror, the size of an actual window, which you could then surround with four prints that suit your style. I agree that you shouldn't clutter things up...you don't have the luxury of a lot of counter space, so you will need to keep your counters pretty clear of things that are only decorative. You can put something nice in the corners, though...Ballard has a group of white urns that are purely decorative, but you might do well at antique shops and fleas, too, and find things you can actually use (these are purely decorative). And I would hang that wonderful plaque on the larger wall over your fridge, so you can get it up higher and see it from the family room. When you put up the shades there is a flat tab facing you (secured on the window frame) and you slip that tab under a plastic piece on the shade, so you can't see it in the front of the shade. Then you push firmly and the back of the plastic shade bar snaps into the prongs. Of course, this is how my shades are. They are not metal though. Those seem a little more heavy duty than mine where. As I remember, you had to slip a butter knife under the back prong and pop the shade out and then the front of the prong (part that slides under the shade plastic piece) can be released by pulling the entire shade forward. Also I remember this was really hard to do and my husband had to do it for me. hopefully that made some sense. It is hard to explain by writing it. So, when putting them up you put the front of the shade on first and then snap it in the bracket in the back, so you need to release it the opposite way....See MoreWay too much wood! Comments (9)Amanda, I am Neha from Styldod. Like all the others who have commented, I'd recommend a new couch for this space. The one you have is eating away a lot of space. Your options for furniture placement are rather limited. With 4 kids, no amount of storage is enough. A storage bench by the door and an end table with storage could help with clutter. I'd also recommend an ottoman as a coffee table so you can use it as seating if required. The shelf above the couch can be removed and you could make a gallery wall with paintings and pictures rather than having them hang everywhere. The images below are estimated to scale for your room based on the photos you shared, but it is very important that you share accurate measurements of your room. In this second design, I suggest a console at the entrance where a couple of low stools/ ottomans can be stored when not in use. You could do away with the kids' table and use these ottomans as seating for them. Also, a tall bookcase may be useful in a small space like this. Open cube storage is a great idea when you have kids running around. I would keep that nice armchair in the corner and would try to maximize the storage areas, so your kids have more room to play. I don't think you have a Medusa Light. These Medusa lights have all the lights coming from the top of the fixture just the snakes came from the top of Medusa's head

I agree with Beverly, it looks like a globe shade is the proper style. You can't just buy any globe shade and expect it to work. There are so many types of attachments, it's not that simple.
The main question is, how do you attach it to the base? Take the lamp into a lighting store and see if a sales rep can help you figure out shade style and exact fit. If they can't order anything for you, then you might need to take the information and shop online.
Or if you know of a place in your town that builds custom lighting, take it to them for help.
FIRST SUGGESTION: From the photo you posted, it looks like maybe you need something with threads inside the opening, so you simply twist it on, like this:
I've shopped for small shades like this before, and had a hard time finding a US supplier. I did find this one on Amazon that might work, but check the ring size first. Or if it's not right, maybe you could contact that seller and see if they have anything else.If you're at a loss, I do find shades like this at Ali Express. They have a ton of variety, but the shipping will be super slow and you can't return it if it doesn't fit. I despise Ali Express, but sometimes I just can't find the proper part anywhere else! (Or Ebay, but it's pretty likely the seller will be shipping from China, so it's practically the same thing.)
SECOND SUGGESTION: did the broken glass shades have removable brass rings, like this? then all you need to do is find the right size globe and attach those rings to them. Video here.
THIRD SUGGESTION:Look for small globe shades that have openings at both ends. You reach in through the bottom and attach them with a large ring that twists around the outside of the socket (video here).
So in this case, you can find a shade that fits close enough, but it's the ring that needs to be a perfect fit. This might be easier to find than my first suggestion of a closed globe. (Here are some rings in different sizes.)The shade will look a little like this, with a small opening at the top and larger one at the bottom:

This is amazing info! I can't believe all the pictures and links!!! WOW. I looked at each option and it sounds like the 3rd is easiest to find and therefore cheapest AND seems would let the most light through.
So I measured what I could, it's hard to picture the curve of a globe shape fitting with the plate-like base. These are the measurements (excuse my total lack of nomenclature):
- Circumference of the threads that shade screws into: 13cm or 5"
- # of Threads: 6
- Opening of the plastic ring piece on bottom of shade that screws in: 4cm or >1.5" across
So, it sounds like option three, you're saying it JUST needs to fit the ring, so that should be easy I hope?What are search terms for THAT type would you use on Amazon? (e.g. "open globe," "twist on base" or whatever? If that doesn't exist I could do Ali, but would want to be sure of fit. Or are you saying to buy the ring and shades separate?

last yearlast modified: last yearYes, the thing that needs to fit perfectly is the ring, the shade can fit close enough (as long as the hole isn't too small of course). So order the rings separately from the shades.
Before you do that though, start by taking the broken shade to a lamp store and seeing if they have anything that works. Or maybe they can order something for you. Maybe they'll even be able to find the right closed globes (I honestly don't think open shades will put out more light so don't let that be a deciding factor, frosted glass shades diffuse light really effectively).
If you do need to buy it from the internet, I believe what you're looking for would be called "open globe shade".
If you wanted the shade to be around 6" wide, maybe these would work. I love trying to get stuff from Amazon since most of their sellers offer free return shipping, so I just buy a few things and just keep what worked!
