Plantation shutters vs Cottage shutters
Comments (1)We have plantation shutters on our windows, and I simply love them. I have not heard the term cottage shutters. We have exterior shutters as well, I never thought about them not going together. Most people I know who have plantation shutters also have exterior shutters....See MoreGetting/making black grout dark enough for absolute black granite
Comments (5)Thanks cat_mom and Maggie, hi and thanks for your interest! I don't have any pics yet beyond the last batch I posted awhile back as to choices... we're about to order the stuff although I've already got the vanity. The big decisions were whether to tile up the walls or not ... I asked the contractor to go ahead and work into his final estimate that we'll do so ... and the tub. I have a deep old white cast iron tub that I am 90% sure I'm going to have reglazed, because it is a tight fit into the alcove and nothing I'm seeing is really quite as thin and also deep and also cast iron. So if we do that, bathroom will be: Black wood vanity, 49" kohler black enamel cast iron vanity top, black tub, black toilet (hoping for Kohler Santa Rosa if the rough-in will fit), and absolute black 12x12 tiles 8' up the wall. Above that will be an off/soft white flat paint section and ceiling, and the door will be that color. Will have a beveled 4'x4' mirror and a beveled-mirror medicine cabinet. All the fixtures will be brass, and probably the knobs on the vanity too. Going with a couple round brass robe hooks (really knobs) instead of towel racks. Getting a black porcelain recessed toilet roll holder, and will have two 12x12 granite recessed niches in the tub alcove for shower and bath use. Will very likely add an all-glass sliding tub door ... though I'd love to do without that and without a shower curtain ideally ... I'm more of a bath person. (I was thinking I could always stash a shower curtain and rod in the hall closet for shower use occasionally... but most likely will go with the sliding glass door. I'm going to get a black plantation shutter box for the bathroom window. And for lighting I will likely have a sconce on each side of the vanity with a black silk pleated shade... so there will be soft light and it will go up and down from the sconces. I may add a dimmable recessed light above the vanity but really would like to leave that option open (pre-wired) till I see what that place looks like and how much I have to tinker with lighting to get the soft glowy effect I'm after instead of glare from all the shiny black and brass. :)...See MoreLouvre Shop, Mr. Shutter, Norman Blind Plantation Shutters
Comments (0)ANyone familiar with this company? I am in the market for shutters for a second home we just built in a resort community near the beach. I am pretty set on PS since it will also eliminate my having to have a fabric treatment in the short-term, if at all. I also looked at Norman Shutters which were ok - not happy with the full overlay and how they jut out of the window. I cannot do an inside mount, unfortunately, due to the variation in size of the four windows and because I have tilt-in windows for easy cleaning. They strongly recommended an outside mount for better light control, too. I also looked at Mr. Shutter and a local company who makes the shutters locally. He does not use a mounting strip like Norman shutters, but uses a trim that is attached to the existing frame and then mounts the shutters. The window trim would be partially exposed, but the trim he uses would jut out about an inch, creating a not-so-clean look, since his trim piece would not completely cover the window trim. Interested in hearing which brand shutters you have, inside or outside mount and if if you are happy with the quality. If you could post a picture, that would be great!...See MorePlantation shutters with external shutter?
Comments (7)Oh, Patricia! YOU hate something (plantation shutters) so much that you cannot imagine why they are still popular. I suppose it is because YOUR taste is not everyone's taste, and that is a good thing. I know you have strong feelings about 4000K lighting, shutters, sage green with brick, and several other choices, and I know you are a "Pro." When you say "I hate" someone's choices, it sounds so demeaning (like "I hate" the name you chose for your child). I often agree with your constructive criticism, but find some of the comments potentially hurtful. By the way, we have beautiful plantation shutters and I love them, but I know they are not appropriate for all homes and also know that they are not everyone's choice. To each their own. As for the OP's question, I believe that the interior and exterior shutters would never be visible from the same vantage point, so I see no reason not to have them if that is what works for her....See Morechloebud
