Any ideas to make my exterior more charming?
Comments (6)Wow. When I looked at your pic, I thought it was the back of the house. I think it's because the patio looks like a patio, and the french doors look like a way to the patio, and there's no front walkway or anything that says welcome, and even the lighting by the door is not symmetrical. So those are things you can definitely fix. Where is the street front and where is the driveway where people park? Is the front door visible from where guests park? If not, it's always more challenging to help them find their way...landscaping helps tremendously with that. Before I'd move the front door, I'd think about what's going on on the inside as well. Do you have a foyer area? If not, this would be a great opportunity to create one. Much more gracious to separate the entry from the living room. Second, in order to tell people where to go, the front door needs to be most prominent on the facade. Also, it is nice for guests to have some kind of shelter while they are at the door. So if you have the ability to add on, I would think about adding a porch with a hip roof to repeat the lines and color of the roof, and have it supported by posts and railing that will make it more obvious where the front door is. Definitely change the style of the front door too so it's more like a front door. And move the downspout to a corner, not in the middle of the wall. I agree the bays are small, but again, it depends on what's going on inside as to how much they can be changed....See MoreAny Way to Attract More than Just Sparrows?
Comments (16)kilian, I'm between Ann Arbor and Ypsi and the lack of birds lately is really bothering me. My husband reminded me that our Cooper's Hawk may be the reason so tomorrow morning I'm going to move my feeders away from my windows and closer to our huge conifer lot line, where I had them last year. I, too, got more birds of all types in Spring and Summer. However, this year I am not feeding after June 1 and not before November. I said that last year, but hope I follow through this year. I do think the lack of snow and very cold weather recently is a contributing factor. I feed safflower in one feeder, BOSS in another, a mix in another, and 2 or 3 suet feeders. 2 of my neighbors also feed, but I haven't talked to them about their business. In this drab weather I am really disliking the BOSS shells piling up on the ground. I wish safflower seed was not more expensive because I would put it in all my feeders as House Sparrows here didn't eat it. The millet in my mix just stays on the ground and I rarely see a Junco or native sparrow anymore. Even the chickadees are rare. I want to feed everything that comes to my yard too -- one can keep so-called bully birds with a mix in its own feeder away from other feeders if one wants to. Squirrels will go to a mix on the ground too. I don't understand the lack of birds either, but we'll see if moving the feeders makes a difference. I have baffles on my shepherds hooks, and 18-inch domes on feeders hanging from my eaves to keep the squirrels on the ground. I want to feed the doves and squirrels but I want them on the ground. I can't help you, kilian. I think the weather is a factor for you. I will keep you posted and you do the same. We're really lucky with our weather, compared to other parts of the States, so I don't really want to complain too much. Pat ....See MoreHow to make this simple white cottage more attractive?
Comments (21)The suggested new windows would make a huge difference! but other than that, yes to beefier window trim; paint the screen door teal also; it looks to me that there is room for a more substantial and attractive porch light (could even paint one to match the door) or have one added to the porch ceiling; and nice sized house numbers next to the window on the porch; beef up the porch column and add half columns (width not height) to the spots where the railings meet the siding; a trellis or outdoor art to the blank wall. If you have a good local garden center, they may have a designer on staff who will create a good layout for landscaping - often for free if you buy all the materials from them. Just tell them that you need lower maintenance. That big hedge is seriously overgrown and needs to be trimmed and shaped....See MoreAny ideas how to make my kitchen more functional?
Comments (72)We have this butlers type kitchenette upstairs and we always need the refrigerator for drinks etc as we mainly use upstairs family sitting area- formal one is downstairs. We put our refrigerator in a corner of the sitting area / dining area for easier access and more space upstairs. Many people have started to do this, perhaps if you could find a place for yours just directly outside the kitchen area, you can use the refrigerator space. Just my thoughts anyway....See MoreSigrid
