Cut back group 3 clematis mid season to rebloom?

Here is an interesting observation/question. We have 3 Romantika in pots. This is their second year. They all were huge and bloomed like crazy. Sometime the beginning of July, the leftmost one got what I thought was wilt. I cut it completely to the ground and wasn’t sure it would come back. The other two continued to bloom and are now spent. The leftmost one is now beautiful and covered in blooms ready to open. Has anyone ever cut their group 3 down radically after blooming to get a stronger plant which has more prolific blooms? Thanks
