bathroom layout

We are about to start our master bathroom renovation and I’m starting to explore options. It’s a tiny bathroom now so we are removing walls…moving plumbing…etc. anyone have any thoughts on the proposed lay out? We are doing most of the work ourselves:) I’m open to suggestions

Is that shelving situation hiding something you can’t move? It’s too narrow and deep for good storage; longer vanity would be better.

It would be good to give us a bit more info. I would make the shower wider than 37" for sure you have lots of space in there

@Bri B - I like that one a lot too. I'm leaning toward the 2nd one now though (becuase I can fit a longer bathtub, and it keeps the window in the shower). I don't love the random space left in the corner, but maybe I'll put a tree there?

If a wheelchair is in you future, rethink the entire layout of the entire house. If you're not in a wheelchair now and don't have a degenerative disease, your chances of being in a wheelchair as a part of natural aging is fairly remote. You're more likely to need a cane or a walker. And it would mean we are sude by side and we would still bump into each other. Lol. Eh, how often do you actually use the sinks at the same time? If one of you is an early riser and will be up and out before the other, why do you need duplicate sinks? Just closing the door off from the bathroom to the closet will pick up space in both rooms. One of the best things about this layout is that you can access the closet from the hallway ... and that it's just across from the laundry room. Given your desire to have an early riser not disturb the other, I think it's a great idea that you're able to get into the bathroom and get all of your clothes from the closet, and even escape through the closet without ever having to go back into the bedroom. Yes, this makes sense. I know others may disagree, but do what works for you. I think the OP's trying to figure out works for him or her. Had a friend with a dryer fire so I am paranoid about it. That's not paranoia ... that's good sense. Try to place your dryer on an exterior wall and clean your dryer vent twice a year. Other thoughts: - I think you'll have some trouble with that sink that shares a wall with the closet ... the pocket door won't share nicely with the plumbing for the sink. - On the other hand, a pocket door would work nicely on the laundry door. - Where will you hang towels for the tub and shower? - Where will you place the trash can for the sinks? - Curbless showers are hard to build right /may end up leaking. Consider instead a 2" threshhold (that's the minimum); it's next to nothing and a hospital wheelchair can even roll over it. - Since you are concerned about aging in place, consider taking the toilet out of the closet. Toilet closets are harder to clean and don't provide storage for medical needs at the toilet. Consider, instead, placing it at the end of a vanity behind a small pony wall. A bit of privacy without the negatives of the closet. - I'd forget the island in the closet. I'd rather have storage all around the edge of the huge closet and a nice stuffed stool in the middle where you could sit down while putting on your shoes /lay out your suitcase while packing.

I can't tell if you have room for this layout, but your bedroom would be slightly larger (12 X 15 feet 8 inches.), although the closet is a little smaller. (12 X 5 feet with a 3 to 4 foot offset 2 feet deep) I have the closet and bathroom almost 12 feet wide. Could make it 11 1/2 feet and make it work I think. Your original layout seems to have a very small door into the closet. I like standard doors on bathrooms if you can make it work. It is nice to see you bed on entry. I might be inclined to put the master vanity, and toilet on the bottom wall in the bathroom to give you a wall for a chest of drawers.

I would shrink the hall closet by about half, move the bathroom entry door to the right, and build a tall linen closet between a small vanity and the new wall…if there is enough money.

Also ..in general…a closet connected to a bath is not ideal…as it is not accessible while bathroom is in use and moisture in a closet with no air circulation…can develop mold and other unpleasant odors

Yes. That shelving situation is where the ceiling has a weird box….see dotted line.

Unfortunately…there isn’t much we can do about the closet location. Hopefully a good fan will take care of mold/odors

Start by researching the standard sizes for shower bases. It's always less expensive to purchase one and have it installed than having one built on site from scratch.

Is it possible to put a door to the closet from the bedroom instead of from the bathroom? That might give you more hanging space (depending on layout) and it would ensure access to the closet when the bathroom is in use, as well as preventing possible moisture issues.

Thanks guys! No seat in the shower. Starting to consider an acrylic or cast iron pan with tiled walls(not as pretty but seems more practical). The closet is 7x 5 1/2 ft.

Can you show the bedroom . Can the door to the bathroom be moved? If the dotted line represents a drooped ceiling, can it be removed?

Are you wanting windows?

I would prefer a longer vanity than a bigger shower.

Yes, 37" is big enough, but if the choice is wasted space in the middle or enlarging the shower, I'd say enlarge the shower.

Agree. I'm all about good storage, but that turning-the-corner thing doesn't seem to work, as it creates a difficult-to-reach corner ... I'd rather see a tall linen closet at the end. I once had a 16" wide tall linen closet, and that thing could hold SO MUCH.

As for a longer vanity, I like the idea ... a 5' vanity, while technically able to hold duplicate sinks, is better suited to a single sink /a bank of drawers on each side. Consider, though, that the toilet is directly across from this vanity ... keep this in mind as you place mirror/s. No one wants to sit on the toilet looking at himself in the mirror. (That's pretty important.)

Agree. Shower bases cost less, last longer and are guaranteed to have a good slope towards the drain. Their one negative is that you must choose from a limited number of standard sizes.

With a shower that large, I'd like to see a long ledge rather than storage niches, but do consider your in-shower storage needs.

Be sure, too, in this fairly large shower, that you place the hand-held shower head in such a way that it can be used to spray the whole shower for ease of cleaning.

I don't think this Houzzer has to choose.

Some basic questions:

- Where will a person exiting the shower reach for his towel?

- Where is the trash can? Will you need a second trash can by the toilet? My old house required two trash cans per bathroom, and it irritated me every trash day.

- Where is your hamper?

- Have you considered some storage AT the toilet? Right now you'll need to store toilet paper, and -- as you age -- you may have medical needs that would be made easier by such storage (both of my grandparents did). Maybe a set of shallow shelves /shallow cabinet between the toilet and the shower -- or a narrow pull-out pantry shelf. Or you could add a small/shallow piece of furniture on the back wall /across from the closet door. You have the space -- 36" is considered a comfortable width for a toilet, and you have a little more.

- Have you considered adding shower grab bars now? You may not need them, but it'll cost very little, and then you won't need to worry about ruining your waterproofing later when you do need them. They make grab bars that don't look industrial, and it could save you big later.
