Pruning Novice needs HELP!
Comments (0)My first post here...fingers crossed that this pic upload works. I have a Golden Rain Tree that has been overwintering in the pot in the ground. I got it at a discount because it was so badly shaped, and I already didn't know how I was going to fix it, then we got a freak October snowstorm that seemed to bring down every weak branch in the area and some healthy ones besides...and it snapped the main trunk off at the stake. Before it leafs out (if it ever does), is there any way to salvage this? (I had to reduce the heck out of the resolution here so it's hard to see, but the stake/main trunk goes up to the midpoint of the window.) Thanks! Image link:...See MoreCleavers, etc.
Comments (1)Cleavers (Galium aparine) and sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum) are definitely plants although they are closely related, both galiums. Cleavers at my place grow in sun and shade but seems to prefer the shadier, cooler locations like its cousin sweet woodfruff. Northern Bedstraw (Galium boreale) grows wild at my place and that plant prefers full sun. It is so much more friendly than cleavers - no "cleaving" seeds to pick from pet fur or clothes. Good luck with the ointments. I've got some calendula and plantain salves in the works. As part of a "pioneer day" event, I recently taught 4th-graders about wild medicine and food plants. The calendula salve I brought in was a HUGE hit and they all got to try it. Calendula isn't a wild plant here but it was a homemade salve. I also took in some jars of oil that were infusing with herbs for salve. It is great fun to share with young people how truly wonderful and powerful neighbors plants are - If you ever get the chance to share with young people I recommend it! I only use herb-infused olive oil, & beeeswax for my salves but I'm sure there are many ways to make salves and creams so depending upon your recipe, you may use other ingredients. Have fun on your trip and best wishes for your garden! FataMorgana...See MoreFAO: Todd in Texas (and all others of course!)
Comments (9)Hey Rob! Nice to hear from someone close to home :). I basically decided to start growing my own as I was fed up with going to the supermarket or grocers and buying chillies labelled 'ball pepper hot' and 'long pepper mild' etc (our American friends will be horrified to hear that I'm sure!) LOL. Also the quality would vary from week to week - one week the hot chillies would be superhot and the next they would be so so. I do cook a lot of curries (have a super Lamb/Beef Madras recipe if you or anyone else wants it) and the heat inconsistency in bought chillies was giving me the total irrits! There's also not a lot of recipes dedicated solely to the enjoyment of chillies on their own as you said. Can't wait to try Todd and calicap's recipes this weekend! I've been a bit disappointed in Bunnings chilli plants for the last couple of years. I must say however that maybe it was where I planted them. I'm sure the first 2 died as soon as they saw the ground and last years effort is still the same size as it was 12 months ago. It's about to be pruned dramatically! This year (if my seeds germinate - please Santa - I've been such a GOOD girl) I will try some in pots as well I think. I would love any spares that you have and am quite happy to pay you for them. Where are you in Melbourne BTW? Reilly...See MoreDesperately looking for discontinued Kahrs flooring
Comments (0)Hi. After a toilet leaked in our main floor power room a section of 10 year old flooring delaminated. We need to replace the floor in that 5x5 room, however, the Kahrs Red Oak Denver has been discontinued. The Red Oak Nature is a match but is 1/2 inch thick rather than 5/8. So, I am on the hunt for a carton or 2 of the discontinued floor. I have called Kahrs and done an online search with no luck. The floor is continuous with the hallway/kitchen/dining room so I would greatly prefer to keep the same material. I read this forum religiously and know that there are great hunters here:) Fingers crossed..... (Cross posted to flooring forum)...See MoreCA Kate z9
