You might check out a product called Goof Off. I first learned about it in one of these forums and used it to remove the remnants of masking tape on the glass surfaces of some antiques we have. I had tried razor blades and a few other products to no avail, but found success with Goof Off. I got it in a 1 pint can at WalMart. The label has a long list of things it will remove, including adhesives and labels. The label also has a long list of surfaces that it can be used on, including wood. It does caution against use on many plastics, worn vinyl floors and some automotive paints. The label does say to test on an inconspicuous area first. I understand that there is also a similar product called Goop Off, but I didn't bother to look into it since I was going with what was recommended. When we removed our carpet, the concrete below had been painted before carpet went down. My hubby used a Bern Z matic torch to heat up glue, then scraped it off with metal putty knife. We have swirls of bare concrete where the glue was. Will paint eventually and hope for the best. I think he also tried a metal wire brush on a drill. All I can say is good luck. Maybe wait for cooler weather. :)

That's not the way renting works. When you own your home, you can redecorate, repaint, reconfigure, and renovate to your heart's (and wallet's!) content. As a renting tenant, you have certain legal rights, including rights to peaceful enjoyment of a healthful environment. However, I don't know of any city where a tenant's legal rights include decor which matches the tenant's furniture. I'm a landlord. I'm pretty easy to get along with, but if that were my house and you were my prospective tenant, I'd respectfully and politely suggest that you should look for a different place to live. I'm amending this to say that I didn't mean that to sound quite as callous as it does now that I reread it. I might tend to such reactions because I've had tenants do truly amazing things to my rentals. One drilled a hole through the wall between the garage and the kitchen, and spliced his welder into the electric range receptacle. Another Sharpie-scrawled a bizarre message to a former boyfriend or girlfriend on a wall. I could go on for pages. So can every other landlord, I'm sure. You can't make this stuff up. So I think it's good that you're asking whether your idea might cause permanent damage (which there's a pretty solid chance that it will). How about this. Maybe you can find a nice folding screen at Ikea or one of the import stores, and set that up in front of the fireplace. You could even commission an artistic friend to paint an attractive scene on the screen, in colors that work with your furniture.

Desperation and frustration talking here. Soak with vinegar and use a tough green kitchen scrubby. (Twenty years back I had to razor blade wall paper off kitchen soffits attached with a rubber glue or bathroom silicon. ) Next thought for you is to cover with a nice crown molding. Good luck.
