Needing reassurance re WT for sliders
Comments (32)rmkitchen, thanks for those pics of your beautiful WTs! Do you mean 'relaxed' roman shades that pooch out a bit at the bottom in the middle? I think yours are more beautiful, myself. Where did you have them made? So much very useful information in your post. If we ever get roman shades (I'm trying these other ideas first) I'll refer to your discussion of issues around them. Funny, but I've now painted all the trim around windows and doors in the semigloss or satin version of the color of the paint on the wall around them, just to try and minimize the trim! (our house is more modern, though, I think). You could always get a bit of trim and just tack it up there with a few nails to see what you think of it--if you don't like it you could take it down again and fill/paint over the tiny holes... And wow, such good information in the rest of y'all's responses! We didn't put up the film yet--DH put a cat-away spray (one called "Boundary" and one called "Cat-Away") around the slider (and the front door--did I mention that they do it to the front door too? UGH), but I think because of the rain it wore off, and what do we have greeting us when we get within 5' of the door? More pee this morning. UGH again. I'm going to order that predator pee granules today--thanks oceanna! I wonder how long it will last in the rain--but it's definitely worth a try. We'll look into the Cat-stop too--thanks, annz. We'll look into the Cat-stop too. I do know where they come from -- one is from a house that belongs to a couple who inherited it from their grandmother, and they are really *not* as caring about anything as much as most other residents in our neighborhood (yard is an eyesore, etc.). When they moved in they immediately let the cat, who's at least fixed, out all day (and part of the night, judging from seeing him out around 11 p.m.). At first he was nice, sweet, a bit timid--now he's a full-on street-fightin' man, one of the ones who got sprayed with a hose and kept on going. Another one (unfixed) used to be fairly sweet, too, when he had a home to go into (the next door house) at night, but when that family moved out of state, they *left him here* to fend for himself. It's unconscionable what they did to him--they displayed just as much of a community spirit by leaving Blackjack (named by the pirate-loving neighbor boys) out as they did in so many other ways while they were here (as in NONE). The little guy's adapted and has survived for --what, 4 years now?--but he's gotten nasty too. Because we know his story, I just don't have the heart to trap him and take him to the H.S., where he'd probably be pts. Not a desirable adoption candidate. Poor little guy. :( There's a third that we don't know at all. The thing I was thinking about neutering them was that my first cat was neutered, but he still sprayed on things in the house (like a heating vent, very smart...it spread the lovely aroma every time the heat came on) -- it may very well be that with these guys, they're so used to spraying that they will not stop if they're neutered. They'd just have an operation site that might get infected or ripped into before it's healed, which could be really dangerous for them. Maybe I'm not looking at that the right way, I know... Off to order granulated predator pee......See MoreWindow shade cleats -- I'm stumped!
Comments (17)lkplatow -- I totally knew what you meant and you didn't make me feel bad; you're so sweet to check back in with me! It was just that I really thought the space looked not bad (as in: not insanely messy) but it just goes to show I do not have an objective eye about my home! magothyrivergirl -- thank you for your feedback! I really appreciate it! Good eye, jenny. I don't know if the fabric is Malloy but it is Ralph Lauren, as are all the fabrics in the family room. (The sofa is Shabby Chic so we just ordered 26 yards of the RL fabric for them to make the slipcover [back in '03]. The George Smith armchairs / ottomans are also RL fabrics, but from '06. They're upholstered in the most delicious raspberry linen I brought back with us from when we lived in Belfast, but the cats did a real number clawing and they showed dirt something awful. Since the Polo store was just a mile or two from our house and since we already the RL fabric on the sofa we just went there to find fabrics which coordinated but didn't match.) I'd love to see the fabric you got from Calico Corners which is similar to the Malloy! I don't remember it as being pricey, but that was in the days before we had children so I looked at many things differently .... My favorite thing about the Malloy fabric is the beautiful pink danphe -- it may not be an actual danphe, but we found that fabric after we spent a long time in Nepal (climbed a b-i-g mountain, studied woodcarving in Patan, helped rescue and raise an orphaned newborn rhino, Mangolseen), so for us the danphe holds deep, spiritual resonance. The cleats are from Chic Cleats. Although I think they're pretty common because I also saw them at different sites, but that's the site from where I "borrowed" the images. ajsmama -- so glad you have koinobori as well! Three of the flags are koinobori and the fourth is from the matsuri of my husband's hometown. That's funny that you don't like the chandelier with the koinobori because we love it, and I love my four year-old's homage to Calder hanging underneath it. Good thing it's our house and not yours, I guess! Have fun with your son's sakana ("fish") bathroom!...See MoreFamily Room: I'm not seeing it
Comments (55)aprilneverends -- I sat on the fireplace step today...and the ONLY piece of furniture I want to keep in there is the couch! Yikes. I told my husband how I tugged at the wallpaper to see if it would come off easily, and he begged me not to do that again. Not for 2-3 years when we're ready to redo that room. I also suggested a big storage ottoman as a coffee table, and he said we have so much room between the couch and TV that we can just stick the coffee table between whatever large new ottoman and the TV. Egads! Makes it worse!! The thing that really bugs me about this room is that it's so... garage sale. So many pieces, no coherence. I'd like to ditch the two red leather chairs and replace with upholstered swivel chairs. Replace the big desk with something smaller, and get nicer desk chairs. The big desk could go into my son's room. We lament not being able to ever eat and watch a movie; our last house had an open layout. Maybe having a tall console table behind the sofa (if we move the sofa to face the fireplace) would work. Something like the Stickley Gathering Island. My husband has always been the one to drive our home decorating/rearranging. He's not ready to move forward with this room, yet I'm impatient. I took down the wallpaper in our bathroom and removed our staircase runner without consulting him first and he was pretty upset about both. I wish I could talk him into letting me take down the wallpaper and paneling!...See MoreOh no...wallpaper bug
Comments (69)I'm trying to pull colors from the wallpaper so I can have some ideas in mind when I go fabric shopping. Most of the colors are great and I can find close matches in the Ben Moore Affinity colors. But guess what. That coral color flower? It isn't. It's actually made up of a mix of like a terra cotta and a burgundy red that blend when you look at it. So from a distance the terra cotta and burgundy look terrible, but up close they look great. So I guess I'll just have to go seat of pants when shopping to see if I can't come up with something that works by eye rather than by actual color match. Somehow looks like this:...See MoreErika McConnell
