Stacked stone is a dirt catcher to the highest magnitude. The only reasonable way to clean it will be by using a hand steamer to clean all the crevices and then mop up the water.

Not only what the previous comments said, but frankly, the look of narrow long and multicolored tiles as a backsplash is about 10 years dated at this point (regardless if it’s stone; it’s long, narrow and multicolored). Perhaps you don’t care about that which is fine. But the entire purpose of a backsplash is to protect the wall with a cleanable material which stacked stone is not. So you are defeating the purpose of a backsplash

Depending on your layout and where you live , stacked stone can look awesome as a backsplash ( I know I am in the minority on this ) . Like anyone natural stone, you have to go into it knowing what the challenges are to keep it clean. I don't cook as much as the average person does but the only place I really have concern is behind the stove because of splatter. That is easily resolved by using a spatter shield - I love mine. Or you could put a different material just behind the stove.

I have even heard of people using their vacuum cleaner to "dust" the back splash.

I would get a sample that you can keep and test out stuff on it - not just oil or sauce but also flour or cake batter - anything that might splatter. Then see what its like to clean it.

I see you also have the stacked stone above the cabinets. If you also put it as a backsplash, that is "whoa, too much stacked stone". Need a different, and quiet, surface there, like plain subway tile with grout that is a similar color to the tile so not so much contrast, cause you got plenty of contrast in the stacked stone above the cabinets.

Plus the issue of lack of wipeability. I will not be a slave to anything in my kitchen - be it the backsplash, the counters or the sink (I read so many posts here about people being a slave to any one of those things, or even - yikes - all of them).

no to stacked stone (too busy, too dated, and not practical) and NO to those dark 12x12 tiles!

just get a nice creamy white 3x9, 2.5X10 tile.

What's the countertop going to be? you dont' have a pic.

It’s going to get gummy, grimey, dust sticking in it. Just a painted wall would be smarter. It is pretty but impractical.

I'm on the same page as Debbi Washburn, natural stone can look great as a backsplash in the right setting. Not saying there won't be more effort to clean it, but I really don't see what the big to-do about that is; she gave good advice above.

Personally, I think it would look great. Would kinda look like a "wall of stone" since you have it above the cabs, and it also ties in nicely with your floors. IMO if you did a different backsplash from the stone, it will look disjointed. So I say stick with the stone.

IMO stacked stone should never have been used inside and for sure never as backsplash anywhere

If there's space and you just have to have it, cover it with tempered glass that can easily be kept clean.

Love the stacked stone! Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous and different - what wonderfully warm cabinets and floor! I’d go with the stacked stone and maybe affix a tempered glass piece or even a metal piece (hmmm… copper?) behind the stove.

Not sure if this is a possibility - but if you could move your lower cabinets away from the wall and get a deeper counter that would dramatically cut down on the spatter. Our cooktop counter is 28” deep (others are 24” and the difference is absolutely not noticeable), and we hardly ever have to wipe down the backsplash.

Stacked stone may be a bit more to clean but I think it would look great as your backsplash. If it is sealed correctly it would make it much easier to clean.

Stacked stone would be very hard to clean and to keep clean. Grease and splatter are going to collect on the surface and in the grannies. Would encourage you to use a smooth surface backsplash instead.

It would look great when it's clean.

I like the idea of copper behind the range and stone elsewhere. (I think it's really a bad idea to have the stone there.)

If you seal it (you should), seal the stuff on the wall above so it's the same color.

It seems the stacked stone is to emulate a kitchen placed against a full wall of stone. IMO changing the backsplash from the dominant stone look would be disjointed and distracting from any point you can see the kitchen, other than if your chin is on the counter and you can only see the backsplash.

I would continue the stack stone, and assuming you will have a S.S. stove, match that with a S.S. backsplash under the hood. An extra detail would be giving the S.S. backspash depth so it looks like it is placed on top of the stone. While you're at it, move the hood out from the wall a bit so the top is flush with the front face of the cabinet.

If you already have stacked stone above the cabinets I would put it below the upper cabinets so the wall is at least covered in One material instead of horizontal stripes of Different materials.

If your range is stainless steel put stainless steel between the range and the hood only. That at least will tie in with the range as a single material in common.

I agree that a natural stone can look AMAZING in a kitchen, but it will definitely be more upkeep than traditional tile. Having said that, stacked stone would not be my choice for stone… it seems dated.

I guess OP really doesn't care since they've never been back.

Sorry! In getting over COVID rebound and while I'm not positive, I don't feel well. I appreciate EVERYONE'S comments! The countertops we were going to use won't work, and they were supposed to do the counters AND backspash. So I was looking for some suggestions about using the the stack stone...I understand the issue with the stack stone. When I'm up to it, I will drive two hours to Santa Rosa Ca to look at new options. In not trying to be rude... just feeling overwhelmed with this rebound stuff!!!

WOW!! Thanks for your input. The pictures below are of what I was going to use but because of the veining, it's going to require 3 to 4 slabs. I was going to use it on the counters and the backslash. I don't want to introduce too many different elements because the stack stone that we did put in is busy enough. I would prefer granite. I love the Blue Roma you showed me but I think it's too busy. I hadn't considered a solid color but maybe that's the way to go. The darker ones you mentioned would be too dark. My walls are rough redwood. Beautiful but dark. I'm beginning to feel better so hopefully I'll get the energy to go visit some slab sites and find something. Thank you again and sorry to all of you whom I didn't respond to individually.
