Grafting Sugar Maple onto Silver Maple
Comments (3)I don't know about compatibility but it shouldn't be hard to find sugar maple seedlings. Look for forestry seedlings from state government run forestry departments. Now is the season to get them. Unfortunately, now is not the time to graft them. Wait until they are dormant again. During spring the rootstock will be growing actively and sap could flood and kill the graft union. summer grafting is possible but more difficult, That will give you a season to pot up and grow your new seedlings a little. And try as many seeds as you can get. They will not be clones, but still come from this seemingly sentimental specimen. If you grow enough you will find one you like, maybe better than the parent....See MoreSugar Maple and Red maple Advice

Comments (2)It just goes to show you how determined one of these little guys can be. :-) The leaves are of good color and being the tree is trying to produce more is a good sign! Don't worry about the shapes of the leave, juvenile plants can display such features when starting out. I would surround the tree with some protection from the deer, rabbits, mice and for sure the highs winds if you get those regularly. Otherwise, water as needed to keep it moist but not too wet. And don't prune anything, every leaf is making food for the roots and every one counts at this stage of the game. :-)...See MoreSugar Maple diagnosis requested.
Comments (34)5-25-2023: Update: Sugar maple has come through the last couple of winters in good condition. Over 13 ft. tall. I have watered by mid-season every year since last posting. It's been near drought conditions; except we've had good amount of snow melt in spring and one or two spring rains, not enough to just let it go solo. Replaced mulch ring today, I hate watering grass. :-) ////...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
