Bona Traffic Semi Gloss over Satin finish

My oak floors were just restained and I had them finished with Bona Traffic Satin sheen finish. I'm now thinking I'd like a little shinier sheen. Is it possible to have them finished with an additional coat using Semi Gloss over the current Satin finish? thanks!

Yes you can. Bona quotes Traffic HD at 40 to 45 sheen level for semi-gloss, so it's not overly shiny. I find it comparable to the sheen on a traditional oil modified satin oil poly. I mention that because some of our customers are accustomed to that level of sheen and don't like the lower sheen offerings that are currently trendy.

(I wouldn't do a semi gloss though. satin is fine)

Dont sand !!! it will only gum up and give you a rough finish. Latex paints take 30 days to cure before sanding is an option. You will be fine going directly over with a satin. Once coat will work but 2 will give you a more uniform sheen.

i just got the matte finish on plain old (new) white oak in my kitchen remodel. They used amber stain because they said it would match rest of house best (old white oak floors that have yellowed). Even though I might have preferred lighter I was OK with that. But decided to hold my ground and asked them to use the matte finish which the floor guys were sort of against. I love the finished product!! It's super smooth, no shine and makes a more modern clean look. It dried nearly instantaneously and they did the whole thing in a day from sanding to top finish. Amazing what new products and technology have done to transform floor finishing. (I last had floors done in around 2001 - big mess). I sure hope this stands up because I love the look. I recommend it. And no smell at all after it dries (same day!)

Yes, but do a very light sanding first. You can also put an actual primer over the paint after a light sanding for durability, especially for the top of the table which will get the most wear.

Hi Audrey! We are having the same dilemma. Its so dull and almost super-matte. Did you have luck with the Bona Semi Gloss over the Satin?

I am still debating as I worried that the semi gloss would be too much sheen! In the meantime, I'm trying the Bona floor polish in high gloss which added a nice amount of shine, although will need to be redone several times a year (butI figured it wasn't permanent so I'd see what I think). Let me know what you decide.

Let me know what you decide. My floors will be stained tomorrow and at this point I have said to go with Satin Finish, but I'm worried it will be too dull and I should go with Semi-gloss?

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this dilemma! No answers, just questions on my end :) Share your thoughts too.

The other factor is that after installing new flooring in part of the house that we just renovated, we sanded and refinished the floors in the other rooms to match as they were old and outdated. We changed to a darker stain which I like but is taking some getting used to.

Thanks! I had no idea this was such a hard decision. My final mix is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 weathered oak, 1/3 gray....hoping it looks ok?! My other option was 2/3 special walnut 1/3 dark walnut.

There are only a few instances when one should use Bona Polish. Otherwise it should be avoided like the plague.

Bona Polish is widely known to be a problem. It's a cheap acrylic polish that I only recommend to people whose floor is on it last legs and requires resanding. It builds up and is hard and potentially harmful to the floor to remove. It scuffs far easier than urethane and can get embedded with soil. Other products that should be avoided include Weiman Polish, Rejuvenate, Orange Glo, Future, Mop-n Glo and the like.
