round gable windows , put 1 or 2?

I have a design question. I am putting gables and have 2.
I can put them on peak 2 and peak 4. Or just on peak 2.

Peak 2 and peak 4, the triangle points are not the same width but they are the same height. So I can have them aligned horizontally but the amount of stone surrounding it will be different.

If I put peak 2, it’s just on top of front door and don’t have to worry how it aligns with other peaks

When I see all of those front facing gables I have to ask one question: Do you have a plan for your gutter system? Every one of those short eave runs between each gable, I believe, needs a down run. That means lengths of gutter pipe running down the face of your beautiful home. I would go back to your designer and ask the question….”How will the downspouts work on this facade?”

Windows like you are describing are quite common for your house design. I suggest you try to find copies of books describing and picturing this style in the Hudson Valley; I think in a house as old as yours choosing the right style of dormer to go with the pitch of your roof would be very important to the look. I live in mid 19th c. house in the upper Hudson Valley so I am always interested in our local houses; I would be glad to post a list of books about Hudson River architectural styles, if you'd like. Inside, the windows will never be conventional (by modern standards that is) but will look just fine. I think you will find decorative treatments for these windows if you look for decorating books with pictures of English cottages, which often have low-ish second stories. You might find that casement windows work well for the sash design. FWIW, my second floor windows are only 22 inches from the floor, although they are full, double-hung windows in a full height room. (My house is Greek Revival with a deep entablature along the eaves which actually covers part of the room's height.) I kind of like my low windows, I like being in bed and looking out and slightly down at the outside world. And my cats think they are great, too. One thing to keep in mind, though, may be the inescapable code requirements if these rooms are to be used for bedrooms. There are building code formulas that require certain sized window openings (or windows) for each sleeping space. In my experiece these code dimensions are sometimes not compatible with historic proportions (they are much larger and squarer). But historic house-lover that I am, I am also a former volunteer firefighter. We had a tragic incident in our town where children were trapped in attic bedrooms in a 19th c. 1 1/2 story house with only the typical "eyebrow windows". They couldn't get out through the small openings, but neither could firefighters in turn-out gear and breathing packs get in to save them. So even if you have a lax code enforcer or are inclined to ignore this, I urge you make sure there is sufficient means of escape. Another issue you will need to consider is how you insulate under the roof down to the knee walls. You can't just slap some insulation against the underside of your roof cladding, you'll need to make sure there's some air space there. Molly~

marti - it faces N. they'll mostly be open. probably looks is the highest on the list. Could be the time i'd close them for privacy. they are right next to my front door. Maybe I should close them when I'm gone? - otherwise anyone could look in and see anything. not much in the room now. a stove, 2 dws, a few bins and bunch of boxes - lol! No one usually comes around but ya never know about these things. It's so different being in here than my old place. did you get an email from me? I sent it last night. shades - that sounds like mine - even the size. I did figure if 1 rod I'd need a center support on that 7" strip. I have curtains in the old place I can bring over here I guess. For now anyway. They aren't what I'd want in there really. But until I find out what I do want, they'd do. I might try to go to the GW this next wk (cool wave - down to a high of 103-105!). I should look for more sheets (bottom) - the last 2 I got there that said 'Q' on 'em -weren't. Next time I'll measure them. I used to have more sheets but I guess a few sets bit the dust this past yr or 2. The bottom one on here now is about 20 yrs old, very thin. but it was really fine - until puppy. several holes in it now. She doesn't know a sheet from her paw when chewing. or maybe she does and has me fooled - lol!

Those original lamps are now split between the kitchen lounge and the living room. I think these old lamps are passé now! I had a similar-sized chest on that side and since I had to pull it out to get the ladder in place, I tried this small table. I'd like to find a matching pair of lamps for my master since I like those others in so many places! What about these since they're the same color as my overhead fixture and rods. Modern drum shade? I'm concerned that they're too tall at 31" with shade. These are metallic in color on the base and 27" high: More bookmarked lamps to come...my web has slowed down

So for those two woods (pine, and 3/4"ply), where you want a smooth cut, how many teeth would be good? I live in an apartment and have to do my lumber work either in the passageway, the basement, or out at my father-in-law's in his driveway, and so a panel or table saw is out of the question for me, much as I would like one. Especially given that I don't have that much elbow room, it's likely I won't do that much ripping on my own, since I tend to buy my lumber at a place with the World's Greatest Panel Saw. (Seriously, an entire room--swoon!) It's more likely that I'd buy the wood and have it ripped, and then crosscut at home. The last time I planned to do that, the panel-saw guy talked me into having him cut the whole project--but I do occasionally need to recut some part that got mismeasured, or I want to do projects with the scraps. (that's the first thing I hope to tackle--a rack to hold the multiple game consoles in a single footprint) So even w/ the short battery life, this saw is probably just enough for what I will actually do. And the truth is that I'd probably tackle a project in several bursts anyway. My projects will also probably be relatively small--that console rack would be 14 to 18 cuts that are 11" long. Or I'd want to cut a small piece of lumber to make a small shelf to mount deep inside the under-sink cabinet--so 2 to 4 cuts of 4" to 6" in length, depending. That sort of small stuff. (I may also splurge on an extra battery or two, which would extend the work time. Since I plan my projects well in advance, I can be sure I'm all charged up.) I *always* cut with a clamped-on guide. I used C-clamps and a piece of metal when I cut shelves w/ my jigsaw. My dad and I ripped plywood using a piece of molding and some clamps, and it was fine. But for Xmas, I bought him the Kreg Rip-Cut (saw a video of someone ripping plywood with a saw very similar to mine, and it looked like it worked well). I thought that jig would make it easier to rip several boards the same width. Next time I go visit him, I'll have to ask to use it, and make my niece some shelves, whether she wants 'em or not. Recently I've been using the locking clamp that came w/ my Kreg pocket-hole jig, and it's even faster that using the C-clamps, and I still have that metal, plus some molding. I also have a Kreg cross-cut guide. I only used it once (w/ my jigsaw), but it worked fine.

When you post here please be prepared for more than just answers about your round windows. I'm wondering if your house might look better if there is some variation of main roof lines. Could the roof over the garage wing be lowered a bit or could the roof over the main body of the house be raised?

Round window on gable 2 only. Eliminate gable 4 to improve your facade by simplifying it.

What is the function of gables 1 and 3? I don't see the difference between your two drawings, what am I missing?

I always want to know why so many gables the exterior looks very busy to me so I would not do any round windows . I do not like the way the gable over the garage is larger IMO throws the whole front off . I also agree the gables create lots of issues with gutter stystems so make sure that is addressed and if where snow is an issue even bigger problems can arise . I think all the grids are too much so maybe try with windows with just less grid lines and see how you like that .I agree where is the architect in this and I too would like to see all the elevations and also what finishes are being used on the exterior. This is just a bit too mcmansion for me but it would be nice to see the whole house.

The house is very busy with all those gables. The only gable should be the one over the front door and no round windows at all. More doesn't make a design better.

Here is how it might look simplified without all the gables. Notice how now your front entry becomes the focal point of the house? If it were me, I'd probably also try and lower the roof line over the garage portion of the house.

cpartist's design is so much more pleasing, simplified and functional too. You need the focus on the front door. It will be less expensive to build and maintain too.

Did your designer give you any other exterior options? I feel like houses like this are a dime a dozen in subdivisions. If you have the chance to do something different by custom building, please don't make it like every other run of the mill house out there.

I like cpartist's rendering but I also believe that eliminating the 2nd and 4th gables could streamline the aesthetic as well.

Sorry the only decision to make is should the round window be on peak 2 and peak 4 or just on peak 2. It seems everyone wants either peak 2 to have a round window or none. The house is built and framed and Indiana linestone already there except for peak and window surround also with Indiana limestone. The only remaining decision is should there be 2 round windows which I call gable windows on peak 2 and peak 4 or just on peak 2. There is one pic attached of current front of house. Thanks so much everyone.

The difference in the 2 pictures I posted initially is there is a round window over the front door at the top in one of the pics and in the other another round window is added at the end peak. That’s the only question. Since the peak 2 and peak 4 width is not the same not sure how round window being added looks.

Locating two round windows in the gable over the garage will make for a cool looking face that will be a hit at Halloween time.
