Carpet and cats

We're looking to replace carpet on our second floor and stairway. We have two cats, one who likes to scratch at the carpet despite multiple scratch pads around. We also have people in the house with allergies. I'm looking for suggestions on the best type of carpet. Berber seems to be the best for allergies and for resisting the inevitable occasional cat throw up incident, but I know the loop style could be really bad for cat claws. I've come across suggestions that some high quality berbers could have loops tight enough to resist claws... but I wouldn't know how to identify one of those brands. Does anyone have experience with it? Other suggestions? I'm hesitant about the more traditional cut pile (like we have now) because it traps allergens and flattens a lot on the stairs. Hard floor isn't an option. Thank you!
