lemon grass rooting from less base than I thought possible
Comments (4)I overwinter my lemon grass in my family room, which used to be an attached garage. I don't heat it specifically, just whatever heat comes from the house. It never freezes, but can be as cold as 38/39 degrees out there at times, and probably averages in the upper 40's for the winter. It does have very good light, as I took off the old garage door and put in all-glass French doors and sidelites, and it faces due south. Does fine out there, and I run it on the dry side....See MoreLarge potted sago possible rot
Comments (12)If there is really rot at the caudex, you will be able to easily push through the tissue in between the leaves with something thin and sharp like a knife. Leaves bending at the hinges can also be a sign of dehydration, or physical damage like heavy snow, or maybe even what you did with tie-ing them. If the caudex is rotting, the leaves will also pull out when you tug at them. From your photos, it looks fine. The only time I have ever experienced apical rot in a cycad is if leaves die back from a frost and the base of the leaf rots because it was not removed quickly enough. Give your plant a good soak, I bet it's just thirsty from being dry all winter. x...See MoreLarge granite Island is no seam possible?
Comments (24)I really like having our island one level and making it two level to avoid a seam wouldn't have been an acceptable compromise to me. Perhaps because I'm short, I find it more comfortable to sit at a counter height island and I would feel too cut-off from seeing the rest of the room by a raised bar while cooking. Also, I'm not sure I understand your layout, but I think you said that the seating area was the 72" side (the one that doesn't connect to the right angle corner. If you made it raised, it seems like you could just be making the problem of reaching the center harder. It would take a long reach to reach the lower counter from the side with the raised counter so whatever was lower would have to be cleaned from the lower edges. I'm also not clear on where the cabinets are under the island. Depending on what cabinets you ordered, perhaps they could be arranged in a different configuration if you wanted. I'm not saying that's what you should do but if it is what you wanted to do, changing your mind now doesn't necessarily mean that the cabinets would have to be wasted. When we thought we couldn't get large enough slabs of the granite we wanted to do our island with one, we did decide it would be fine with a seam. A good fabricator can do excellent seams. Usually the granite slabs are book matched. Granite slabs are successive slices of a block of granite. "Book matched" means they alternate which side of the granite they polish so that for two successive slabs, the sides that touched each other in the block were polished. Therefore the grain on one will be an almost perfect mirror image of the grain on the other. They can layout the pieces for each side of the seam on the two slabs so that there is a grain match at the seam. If they can do a tight seam, it can almost disappear and the result can look very good. I'm glad that we were able to find big enough slabs to not need a seam. But the seam with book matched slabs would have been my second choice....See More9" vs. 12" drawer base cabinet, sink base size and 4.5" space
Comments (18)Thanks for the headsup, angela12345. I measured the GD and went to HD to measure the interior dimension of a 30" sink base cabinet. My oh my, a 30" sink base is TINY! But, it will have to do for now. The 33" sink base has more space inside and I wish we could put it in our layout without my being so bothered. Sigh. Alas, I really can't stand how the spacing of the sink base is uneven in relation to the already lopsided window on the wall. It makes me feel I am living in the winchester mystery house! So far, I have ascertained that it can hold our trash, recycle bin and compost pail, with a smidge of room left for fire extinguisher. Definitely no room for insta-hot water heater and filter. So, we nix that from our wish list. I am looking for a single bowl undermount. After some online research, I found a kindred sink KCUS30A-10/10BG that I like but I don't know if it's available online or not. I wish I could use the ticor sink but the one I like needs a 33" sink base. Bummer. The kindred sink I am interested in will have interior dimension of 27"W x 16"L x 10"H. I think that will work beautifully for washing my long-handled pans. Here's the specs: http://www.kindred-sinkware.com/grfx/products/specs/KCUS30A_10-10BG.pdf. Hope Kindred is a good product....See Morelanikaicoconut
