Help! countertop not deep enough for Slide-in Range?

New countertops installed, now slide-in range is sticking out (NOT due to wall or cord behind, but due to the cutout depth).

If cutout was deeper / correct, range could slide in at least 3/4" more.

^^Is this worth arguing with the countertop company over?

The cutout depth is conveniently the 1 dimension missing on the written template...They're saying we approved of the "physical template 'White Strips"' which I never saw/didn't know existed?

Any advice?

Are you saying they left a strip of countertop behind the range? Can you show the cutout and back of range?

No they did not leave enough room for it to slide-in, so it is sticking out past the cabinets more than intended.....

Underneath the countertop, there is an inch or so of extra space between the wall & back of the range.

I would get the island trim and run the counter behind it like a slide-in range. You'll love that extra space back there! (I assume you've worked out the hood issues already.) I wouldn't want the range inset--for one thing, you aren't supposed to have the oven door tucked into cabinetry.

Our "aisle" has the island end with a 36" 3 drawer base across from the sink, dw, another drawer base. When one person is at the sink another can be at the island working and even opening drawers easily. No one has to scooch in or adjust body movements. If the dw door is open I can open both the top and middle drawers fully, the bottom drawer can open but not fully. The bottom drawer is not an issue though. The over lap is about an inch. I can still put things in and out with no issue. Typically I open the dw, unload onto the island, then put away from there. The drawer has never hit the dw door. If you have 47" you should be fine in my opinion. The extra 5 inches should take care of any possible overlap. Keep in mind that I can't read all of your post, as the right side is covered in ads for me. I did not understand ripleys post to you but I may be missing something. If it would help and can take some photos and post them. Let me know.

I am so sorry your KD and flooring guys are idiots. Take a couple of deep breaths and a minute amount of alcohol and at least one day before deciding to accept or reject the proposed solution. The correct thing to do is re-install everything after raising the cabinets with another layer of subfloor. It needs some thinkin' about what the consequences are and who's paying for them. It really doesn't have anything to do with the range being a slide-in. The same thing would have happened with numerous ranges. Be careful of the dw because the next problem usually occurs when the dw needs service but can't be removed without damaging the finish floor. That has happened to multiple people over the years.

All the comments are concerned about how much a counter top overlaps the actual base cabinet which is 24" deep in most cases. The counter will hang over the cabinet another inch (0'-1") so the depth would be 25". What nobody has mentioned is the actual depth of the range itself. For example, an LG range's depth dimension is 29-9/32", so this range is going to protrude 4 to 5 inches past the cabinets and counter installed as-is already. Most of the slide-in ranges are built for ZERO clearance at the back, and are designed to sit flush against the wall. If you are installing a true "drop-in" range, then you would most likely need a strip of counter at the back because this design necessitates it. These are "slide-in" ranges, that are designed to fit into the space a conventional range would normally fit. If you add a 1-2" strip of counter top behind a slide-in, your range will protrude 6-7" past the counter top. It will look kind of ridiculous how far out it will protrude if this is done. If you want a more integrated look, do a drop-in range, which are harder to find, and not as nice looking as the newer slide-in type. Or just do a flat top and a separate over unit.

Did they have all the dimestions of this range pre-fabrication?

was there a template from the range company?

All the numbers match up?

Why can't they just cut the back portion so that it slides back?

What does the range specify for the cutout depth? It should be in the installation guide. And What is your cut out? Once you have that difference, you can then ask them to come out and cut back the top. It really shouldn't be a problem.

Now the question is - who pays for it? Was the stove in place when they templated? Or did they receive a copy of the required depth cutout for the stove? You said there was no depth shown on the template you approved - do you have your copy of that?

This is fixable.

Look up your range manufacturer's installation instructions which will give you the recommended cutout requirements. Your's is apparently similar to the Bosch, page 7.

I don't see why the cutout couldn't be made deeper and the unit pushed in farther.

I’ve often wondered if my slide-in range should have been recessed by another inch. I’ve lived with it for almost a year after renovations and it honestly doesn’t bother me. It replaced an electric cooktop with oven below and the electric box had to be moved for the plug so I’m not even sure there was room to push it further in. It’s still the same reach to the back burners so I decided to not make it an issue.

There are “backless” free standing ranges meant to fit into the standard range size… perhaps what you have vs a traditional slide in?

Sorry but they templated wrong if they had the install instructions then they goofed so make thwm fix it . I make sure every appliance has the install instructions provided before any templating is done . BTW you sign off on a template that should also show you where seams go too and you initial it so no initial no approval.I do not see the pieces that sit on top of the counter with a slide in range maybe what you have is just a free standing range I need to see the install instructions for that range

Installation instructions are very strong suggestions only. Were I a fabricator, I'd cut to your provided specifications, but if GE built and shipped a 30 1/4" range that day instead of the 30" they were supposed to, you'll get a backcharge for my extra trip.

One ? is the vent thing on the back of your range attached/required? sometimes, a slide in range comes with an optional back piece for use when replacing a free standing range

I don't think your counters were cut incorrectly. Most installations have the range project out in front and the filler in the back.

See the vent I have circled on your range. If the heat from that vent gets too close to your cabinets, the paint will discolor or the acrylic or plastic finish will delaminate.

install guide says the filler kit is only needed when countertop depth opening is 25 inches. have you removed it and tried sliding back further?

Looks like it should stick out 2 7/16" to the front of the door, when the cabinet opening is 24" in depth. Verify with a tape measure that the cabinet opening is 24" deep, with no obstructions. Then measure how far forward the door front is from the cabinet fronts.
