Is my astilbe spreading?

I planted a baby Younique Salmon Astilbe 2 months ago, it was just a twig looking thing. It’s my first time with astilbe. It gets direct western sunlight for at least 8hrs and is in compost/leaf mulch-amended clay. I didn’t expect it to do much as I have seldom watered it, no fertilizer. I wasn’t planning on keeping it there because I thought it was too much sun. There is another YS astilbe from the same supplier 3 ft away in shade that has barely even grown and these things aren’t surrounding it. Are these just weeds growing around that coincidentally look like my astilbe or is this plant spreading already? If so, can I dig the little clumps up and plant them in other beds?

Hard to see but I have never seen astilbe spread like that. It says online that astilbe form a compact mound which is what mine do.

Astilbe crown gets very woody with age. I suspect you just cut through the crown. It's fine - you can sometimes manhandle the pieces apart, but it's much easier to use a knife. Around the edges of the division where the crown is sliced sometimes do not recover well, but the center of the division will be fine.

My guess would be deer--I don't have them where I am but I do have squirrels, chipmunks & bunnies. None of my astilbes or hosta have ever even been nibbled--I'm guessing because I'm not in their established path but a neighbor's shade garden just 3 houses up the road from me gets chomped by deer every year.

asiatic beetles are a pain, sorry to hear you have them. I didn't want to spray anything so I ended up going out there with a pail of soapy water, picking them off and dropping them in the water to drown. It's a bit on the strange side to be out there in the dark going over your plants with a flashlight, but..... the neighbors will talk and there's always that awkward run in with an evening dog walker, but it seemed to control them enough. I heard someone suggest Surround, which is a clay based spray that's supposed to work... there are plenty of other sprays with chemicals that should work too but I've never gotten that serious about control. Maybe someone else has better ideas.

Where do you live? Don't use bleach on roots. Use a fungicide. Maybe copper or Physan and spray the stones. Fungicide won't hurt the roots. It will also clean up your pavers. Jane

What you have there appears to be an aggressive spreading weed rather than an astilbe. :(

Definitely not Astilbe. Compare with Rorippa sp.:

is her original plant even an astilbe??

did you plant flower and drop seed.. if not.. then its not spreading underground in 2 months.. nothing grows that fast .. especially since you didnt pamper it ...

and many of those things dont have leaves that are close to A at all.. you need to look a bit closer ....

Wow. You all are totally right and I am so bummed. I looked at that link, then downloaded a plant identification app…. And yes. It is a weed :( I found my dead astilbe. Thanks everyone! God knows how long I would have let these grow proudly. My husband thinks this is hilarious 🫠

The dead stem doesn’t look like Astilbe either.
