I like it and it mimics the center window in the room further down. Consider a couple pretty shelves to put some welcoming decor there.

You could always compromise and put a piece of artwork over it to cover it.

I had one in my last home, although about three feet tall, and I loved it. I had a vase with a floral arrangement in it, which was later replaced with a piece from my father's funeral. During construction I had it wired with a recessed light in the top of it.

I would keep it. If I didn't own the perfect piece to display I would shop some art shows until I found the perfect piece.

I like it, and would put shelves in for decor. If you do cover it, maybe just with a piece of art so easy to change your mind? (rather than drywalling it in)

Remove it. The fact you are asking about it, shows you have doubts about keeping the niche.

"There was a small lit sculpture in it before the remodel." What happened to the sculpture? Seems you moved on from it so move on from it's niche. I would need to find a antique phone. One of the tall ones it takes two hands to manage.

I actually like the idea of an antique phone. When I was growing up we had a niche that was made for a phone. Above the phone we’re three monkeys signifying see all ,hear , all tell all.

In the hall that way...seems like that is why it was put there, That is exactly where phones used to sit.

Keep it. Since it has electricity it would be great for light up holiday decorations.

Hallways do not need illuminated holiday decorations or any other knickknacks. Just cover the niche.

We are in the middle of a major remodel.

Being that it is a major remodel, I would focus on those windows. Because I really dislike arches. And because the arches/ circles are at odds with the very nice geometry of the ceiling framing.

You can always hang a long mirror over the niche. I like a mirror near my exit point for a last minute check for stuff stuck on my teeth & 'did I remember to comb my hair?'

If I kept the niche, I would have to square off the top. But when the tools came out, I would most likely/ almost for sure decide to eliminate it.

lkloes, you may not, but people do decorate their entries for the holidays. It gives a home a holiday welcoming festive look.

If you have something sentimental from a deceased relative, display it there. It could double as a memorial shrine and strike up some interesting converations.

Great ideas! Unfortunately, squaring the windows is not in the budget for this project. And the house brick is no longer made so it complicates projects.
We did replace the bottom windows with picture windows though. We took out two arches in this project - both on walls going into the kitchen, but there are a couple left.
I don’t like the niche, but my boyfriend does. He had a small (12” or so) glass sculpture in it that I don’t like. It’s too small for that niche.
I like idea of a mirror over it or gone completely.
My boyfriend likes the looks of the large vases in it.
I guess we’ll see if we can find a mirror that would look good and try that for now.

I found this wooden mold while looking today. It would fit in our niche.

I love when someone doesn't say "I don't like this feature of my home" until 30 people have responded. Were you just hoping that a bunch of us would say get rid of it so that you could show your boyfriend how wrong he was?

You will always have people who have different opinions. I love art and sculpture and never have enough space to display everything. I go to at least 6 art shows a year and usually buy at least one new piece of art every year. I would keep it.

If you don't really care for art, it isn't your thing than you may not like it. I have a friend who has almost no art in her home and doesn't want any "dust collectors" in her house. I find her home to be lacking personality, but I am sure she finds mine too busy.

You just happen to be in a relationship with someone who feels differently than you. This is a great opportunity to learn about each other, communicate and come to an agreeable compromise that gives you both a win. He may be able to keep his niche but you get the wallpaper you love in the powder room or he gives up the niche, but gets to have his favorite recliner in the living room.

allison, that's different. is it something that would fit the overall style in that entryway?

I'd just do a vase and tall stems. Or, shortent the niche and do one of those really nice faux orchids.

A large piece of art or mirror would be a-win win for you both perhaps until something els comes along, concentrating on your other more pressing remodels.

Of course you may not can have anything there while you work in process?

I’m with Alice. You’re in the middle of a major project. This is not the time to worry about this. When you’re done, cover it with a big piece of art. You may find something absolutely perfect in the future. I wouldn’t eliminate it but wait to find the “right” thing that makes you both happy.

I am curious though about that piece you found? What is it? Mat be nice in the living area, depending on your style? Very interesting though! Conversation piece for sure!

What is that wooden mold. It looks a bit creepy.

I’m not sure what kind of mold it was. It just said wooden mold and the shop person did not know. We were looking for comfortable counter height bar stools today (another time-consuming effort). I will google the mold. I just noticed the shape of it.

We’ve been looking around so much, stuff, the niche is a bit of a distraction. I think we’ll keep it for now.

We are going to have an art wall in the hallway just before the niche. We both have lots of various art pieces and mirrors we’ve collected and think it will be fun to hang it in the hallway.

Really, I just wanted ideas for what to do and I got ‘em.
