Design Dilemma Flooring

coordinating different flooring

We are remodeling our kitchen/dining space (which is the orangey engineered flooring). The rest of the house is hardwood, stained sort of a provincial oak tone. The space is very open, as you can see in the second picture, and so the new floor we put in will be very visible against the hardwood. Unfortunately, it is not in our budget to put hardwoods or tile into the new space. We are going with LVP. I’m looking for any suggestions on how to coordinate the new flooring so that it doesn’t clash (like it does now) or look so jarring next to the hardwoods.

If you put LVP next to real wood it is going to be a jarring transition. Probably worse than what you have now. Manmade materials next to natural materials look even more fake. The only thing that is going to look right is to continue the wood. Or since it's not going to look better with LVP, maybe just leave it the way it is. Lumber costs have gone down recently so if you got a quote for real wood floors a year ago, get a new quote.

Pick something that is not wood look would be the best choice. Anything wood look next to real wood will clash .

Ok, so my DH brought it home and..... I don't like it :( Sometimes things have a way of growing on me but I don't think that this will. And, of course, the cabinet isn't finished yet so it's a bit hard to see it and judge with the cabinet looking the way it does above rather than the rest of the cabinets. My complaints - I think it'll be too dark. It's the darkest thing in the kitchen and it's basically the longest uninterrupted stretch of counter (the area next to it is 112 but that includes the sink) so it seems very visually prominent. I'm not a huge fan of the strips of wood next to the strips of wood in the floor. The finish on it is pretty shiny and somehow it appears very lifeless and flat - DH commented that it looks like laminate! I realize that this could be changed with a different finish on it. The positives - it looks really nice with the dark wainscotting in the dining room. It's not in the dining room of course but the view through is nice. The wood itself is pretty gorgeous. The colors and patterns are SO pretty. I'm thinking now that I need a different wood species. I think I'd prefer something that's more in keeping with the colors in the floor. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm thinking about sapele, mahogany, cherry, teak and maple. I think I'd probably prefer a plank style so that it's not as visually similar to the floor. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated!!

Something for shower floor to coordinate with marble hex?

You could go with a solid shower pan. in a nice matching gray or a white. In your space it might work wonderfully depending on the layout. I have a 3x5' cast iron shower pan in a very light gray. they come in 4x3' too. Or get a solid surface manufactured one to meet your needs. In my 5' long pan, I used french shower doors, so I only drilled into the side walls for mounting. Would you use two different carpets in this bedroom or coordinating?

It is totally appropriate and often done to use two separate Oriental carpets in one room. And it sounds like they would be the right type of floor covering for a more traditional or transitional room with the type of furniture and look you want to achieve.

little yellow for my liking. Do you like it? I was going to suggest Pale Oak It's shown here w/White Dove trim. It's also here: BM Sea Salt (much different than SW sea salt, which is greenish) The other choices are these. I've done Light Pewter in my own home. it's warm, soft gray, neither blue/or yellow, or taupe, and looks great w/wood tones. Athena is also pretty. If you want even lighter than those, there are these. Since these colors are all closer to red/pink undertones, they would look much better w/your wood stain colors, since those are also red-based. BM Lacey Pearl. very light. but no yellow I think you should try a few more samples. If you don't look at the current color and really enjoy it, then don't use it.

Can you sand refinish all same colour? Some engineered floors can be refinished.

Unfortunately, the cost of hardwoods is coming from the fact that the subfloor would have to be redone because of the differing floor heights (at least that’s what our contractor said)

And the engineered flooring has got to go as well… it was the cheap, .99 per sf stuff and has chopped and broken very badly in places. We were also told it’s too thin to refinish

For right now a few throw rugs might help.

Well, it’s also the nature of our kitchen remodel… we are reworking the floor plan so the cabinets are all moving… there will be no flooring in large patches. The engineered flooring is going; there’s no way we can keep it.

I would choose a LVP that isn't wood look. My brother recently put one in his kitchen that I thought was tile when I first walked in. It looked like slate. I'm pretty sure this is the one he has, but there are other looks and you can see them better in the reviews. Many people have tile in the kitchen so that's what I would do.

I would do a stone look LVT. Karndean has some very nice stone look LVT

either tile/stone-look LVT or very light colored wood-look...trying to match the hardwood is only going to fail and look bad, so make the difference look intentional
