Comments (1)It's not bad! Paint the red out and look at unfinished furniture stores for a banquette. But first go ask the kitchen forum. They will take care of you. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath...See MoreNeed help with kitchen remodel problem: counter heights not the same
Comments (10)I think your contractor should have discussed this with you. Maybe he didn't realize it beforehand? Our kitchen ceiling varies up to 2", I'd say. I don't know that anyone figured it out until the cabinets and moulding were going up, but our contractor and designer worked to make the cabinetry level without a trained eye noticing how uneven our ceiling is. My kitchen island is slightly higher than the surround, for prep purposes. I think it looks just fine. But, it might be different if one perimeter run was lower than another perimeter run. I hope you can work to solve this!...See MoreDrowning in a sea of oak - Need help with kitchen remodel ideas!
Comments (18)Hi everyone! Thank you SO MUCH for all of the feedback - beyond helpful and appreciated. So, looking back at the photos, the color/character that comes through on the photographs aren't quite true to the real deal. While the cabinets aren't the typical honey oak, they aren't the walnut with character like the photos look to show. Either way, I'm definitely hearing that many of you think I should not paint them - well noted! We're not quite sold on painting them and have been nervous to do so - we've heard oak doesn't paint well etc. With that said, I think I could have been more thorough in my original post in what I think the kitchen is lacking - which is contrast. While the pics don't show it the best, the flooring is the exact same color as the cabinets - and the countertop and backsplash don't add any contrast. I'm liking the idea of changing the countertops and backsplash (put in by previous owner which I've wanted to change anyways) and putting in runners! Brilliant! As for the island - it is really too small and we would like to have island seating for entertaining etc. - people tend to just stand around the kitchen when we have friends or family over and it would just make it more inviting to have island seating. My thought is to have a custom island made - and paint it cream for a contrast. I then plan on adding a cozy little area in front of the fireplace with a few chairs and eating in the dining room instead of the kitchen - old school style! I like the idea of a hood over the stove - how much does this usually run... ballpark? I also like the idea of white trim - is painting trim a bad idea - would you suggest just replacing it altogether?...See MoreNeed help with kitchen remodel ideas and suggestions of our new layout
Comments (42)Yes but its not just the desired look. If cost is not a factor, anything is possible. But if you have not done a lot of remodeling, you may not be aware of all the associated costs with changing all this. The ceiling, the lighting, framing out the window and wall, matching and replacing the existing exterior. While maintaining the exterior design balance. Moving plumbing, gas and electrical. Your house was built for this kitchen so everything you are considering has major expense to change. You might be better off as far as function and design to bump out the back and redo the whole thing....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
