I have a wooden table that has a glass top and under the glass is a hand drawn map of London depicting all the landmarks such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Next to each landmark is a number and at the bottom of the table there is a key telling you the name of that landmark. Does anyone know anything about these kinds of tables please. Many Thanks

That is also a neat idea - and I thought of that - if I only had time to visit salvage places and such. It is really strange, because mine is so low. I sort of measured it against my knee and it is about the same height as my current coffee table - yet yours is so tall --- wonder how the machine fit on top of it - mine has a whole cabinet on top with drawers (2) on each side ---- The other thing I am trying to do is avoid the Made in China tables - I just bought furniture and it is USA made. Some of the components may be made in China - I don't know -but it is made in Indiana. I have no large pieces made other than the good ol' US of A - and I would like to keep it that way. I have been looking at tables in the $600 - $800 range and all are made in China. I think this is one of the 'be true to yourself' in decorating things. It might not matter to someone else, but I find it important. Of course, when I told DH I was once again saving him money, he was all for it!!

Something about that style and finish is just what I'm looking for. lido, you may be right, and I think I'd rather compromise having the leaf seam than the having a different base style or woodgrain or finish on the table. bronwynsmom, thank you for that info. In addition to the leaf thing, I think that size would probably be more suited to the scale of my room, but by definition, wouldn't those tables be more formal? What I like about the one I'm considering is that it's oak, which seems less formal, yet the style is not country-ish (not that there's anything wrong with country, just doesn't go in this house). I emailed the seller back asking for a picture of the underside of the table to see if we could possibly cut it down and she sent me some fuzzy photos saying the top does appear to come off after all, so I think we should be able to do it. She said the diameter of the top is 45". I'm going to have to try to mock something up to see if that will look right. This is a small room with small-scale seating, so it might be too big. But the biggest question is will she come down significantly on the price; I've been looking for this table for a while now, and of course it shows up 2 weeks after I quit my job!

Well my DH picked it up. It really is lovely! It does look like the original finish. it's solid and heavy - not like the cheap stuff sold today. I count this as a score! Seller was asking $25.00 but when they emailed me back the said they would leave is out in the driveway for free. DH left $25.00 on the porch. There is slight damage to one of the leg joints but totally fixable. I didn't realize that top was inlayed brass but it is!!
