Newbury Kitchens 617 247-1234 has imported from Italy a Rex Electrolux slide-out far more discrete / invisible than the ones you have seen above. They may get you or another GW'er in to see it in operation on a job site if you move fast. The one in the showroom is not wired. I always think hearing the blower in operation is better than buying "sight unseen' or noise unheard. When pushed back into the dormant position, its front angles up into the cabinet. When slid out to capture smoke it angles down slightly so it could be positioned as low as a sneeze guard -- between your eyes and your hands. Many upper cabinets are installed 18" above the counter so this design makes sense to me. If you are tall, it will naturally end up below your eyes anyway whether it's installed low or not. The others you mentioned above all slide out horizontally, at eye level or at head level, so you still have the same obstacle to work around as if it were a solid headbanger, although they are less likely to give you a concussion since they move around when you hit them. The shape of the capture canopy counts for a lot, so this design (angle) makes sense for this reason too. About sizing. For many people, 300 CFM is plenty, adequate, fine, acceptable, a-ok. For others, they feel they need double that. High end manufacturers, such as those antss referred to, make some vents that pull as much as 550 and 600 CFM but not many models that pull more than that. Some people want quadruple that, and American and Canadian vent manufacturers sell them what they want. Feel free to say no to having more CFM, and feel free to say yes to having more. A lot depends on your duct size. How much make-up air are you able to provide? The more air is sucked out of the house, the more "make up" is needed. Air is not compressible (unless under a lot of pressure) so you need to replace every cubic inch you send out of the house. Make-up air (MUA) could be provided by opening up a window. If your house is well built and well sealed, you may be limited by the MUA factor and not by your duct size. In your climate, is it an option to open a window in wintertime? If you have a full house air exchanger like an ERV or HRV, you may have enough MUA without opening a window. Your duct size. How big is the diameter of your round duct, or what dimensions is your rectangular duct? E.g. if round: 5", 6", 7", 8"? If rectangular; 3" by 10", 3.5" by 14"? Here to provide an update 5 years in. It's been a mixed bag. Still have the range and it still performs well overall. However, I have had some issues that have reduced my enthusiasm. I've now replaced the electronic panel twice and the fan designed to cool the panel also failed. I suspect that electronic panel will need to be replaced every 2-3 years. There is just not enough insulation between the heat sources and the electronic panel. There is a designated fan to keep it cool but I don't think it is sufficient. I also had the fan itself die. Thus far Jenn-Air have been pretty good about the repairs. The most recent situation was a couple of months ago and the control panel died rendering the oven unusable. Jenn-air paid for the parts and I had to pay for the labor. I doubt that support will continue into the future. Also where I live getting a competent tech to come out hasn't always been easy. One fo the companies that Jenn-air arranged to service the range was absolutely horrible and never bothered to show up at all. I think this design is flawed and makes me now weary of recommending this product. The other thing that has become more annoying is that the control panel and the knobs tend to get really grubby from cooking. Their location on the top rather than the front has advantages (harder for little kids to play with and accidentally turn on) and disadvantages (messy). I didn't seem to mind this initially but it bugs me more and more now. All of the non-electronic bits have held up really well (grates, burners, igniters, pan under burners etc.). The door is still operates very smoothly. If I had it to do over again I think I would splurge and go for the open-burner range I coveted at the time (Bluestar or Capital) and avoid all the fancy electronics.

@mojavean: while your characterization might be agreed with by others, I want to take the time to better explain my thought process. I have been a huge GW fan for years. I've read a ton. learned a ton, and posted a fair amount. Some of that stuff might have even been useful to some. What I would point out is that GW thrives as a community that shares a conversation. The life blood of this process is a two-way interchange: one person needs information. He/she posts a question. Others with useful information respond, not for fame or money, but because they genuinely have an interest in helping. Moreover, most posters, and I am sure you'd agree, love to have others chime in with their thoughts. The best threads are the ones in which a lively, ongoing, multi-person interchange goes on for days and days. Opinions are offered, debated, disagreed with, and all involved learn something. The worst threads are ones in which the OP seems to lose interest. You'll see others respond to their post and attempt to help out but no response is forthcoming. Even if it's just to say "thanks," GW etiquette really asks that you at least respond with a "thanks." And since you're concerned that we didn't look at the dates of the posts, I'd suggest that perhaps you should do the same? The OP posted on 12/13. He/she got three responses within one day, including two detailed responses from two long-time GW posters who are some of (nah, kas IS) the most knowledgeable folks on this Forum regarding ventilation. The OP then proceeded to 1) not respond for TWO weeks 2) ignore the questions and advice given by pillog and kas and 3) reveal that he/she already bought a hood apparently based on the "extra cash I saved." In my occasionally humble opinion, if you are going to post a question, you are obliged to see if there is a response, and to indicate your appreciation. "It feel off the front page" is not an excuse. The reason it fell off the front page is because the OP ignored the thread for two weeks. And if you're going to ignore the advice anyway, why post in the first place? So, yes, I did look at the dates of the post, and if you were reading more carefully, you would have realized that.

I've been wondering about this one also. I've had slide-out styles before and found them perfectly satisfactory with a lot of nice advantages (for example, tall spouse bangs head, hood slides back in, no pain, no blood. Very low-key when not being used allowing other things to be bold in the kitchen design.) . This model has pretty good CFM, the brand has a good reputation, and in my not-very-humble opinion, the slideout canopies work. If I decide to get this size instead of a 36" model, I don't think I'd hesitate...well, a little maybe. In my last remodel I had the GE Monogram 36" slideout. No reviews, and no problems. So if you find any reviews, don't be shy. DO share! :)
