A Pattern Language (can you pick out the patterns?)
Comments (6)Yeah. Those were my inspiration pics. The top home is Asphodel plantation built in 1820s, the middle is a home built in LA by a popular architect from Baton Rouge, and the last is a home designed by A Hays Town. The last home is surrounded by 130 acres and recently sold to some fortunate family. "My theory is that we're always trying to recreate our perfect childhoods, at least for those so blessed." I agree with that to a certain degree. I grew up with 1500 acres of old growth hardwood behind my home which I explored daily. It was great and I miss it. The land we are building on is the closest thing I could find resembling that 1500 acres and it brings a bit of nostalgia. The home on the other hand is a plan designed with input from my wife and me. It's changed a lot over the last 2 years from what we started with. Thank goodness I found this website otherwise I would have had a big soulless mcmansion. I'm not saying our home is perfect but at least I learned what we liked and what makes a home feel comfortable. Our first plan would have been a disaster....See MoreHELP! Comments (9)The plants don't have to be completely dying back before the topsets can be replanted. I've been growing these many, many years. Usually, I wait until the topsets have some size, and they have little "hairs" of green regrowth from the sets, and I snap off the tops. I break apart the topsets and plant the individual bulbs 2-3 inches apart. Only replant immediately what you need, putting the extras in a cool, dry place (basement or pantry), and wait a month or two to replant those. The first batch each year is the ones overwintered, but by replanting a smaller amount about every 6 weeks I keep green onions coming from about now until December....See MoreNeed more feedback - Round 2
Comments (32)cpartist, good one! :) The lot is a rectangular shape, longer than it is wide. ppf, thanks for that visual! The only dilemma is I have to walk through the drop zone (where my kids drop all their junk) to get to my master. I really like alot of other things about this option though....See More1/16 inch up to 1/2 inch long
Comments (39)The reference to " swimming toward the light " is what Garett said to his Dad and I when he took us snorkeling in March 2018. DH and I had never been snorkeling much less at night in the ocean. Garett wanted us to be comfortable so we took a full day class on Maui with a private instructor and we had a kayak that we used as our base of operations. We spent 4 days on Maui that visit then we went to the Big Island where Garett lived and spent another 7 days. We went on a second outing this time with Garett to the Kapoho tide pools. They are gone now as the volcano came shortly after our visit. Our next and most amazing adventure was Garett taking us out into the ocean after dark to see the Manta Rays feed. We saw a tourist boat anchored well off shore with the light in place to attract the Mantas. We originally swam to an area close to shore by a well known hotel that has a light turned on every night to attract the Mantas. It was low tide so they weren't there. We were floating trying to decide what to do when he said let's go...what ??? My DH was game but I said WAIT ! Where do we go ???? Garett was fixing his mask and briskly said " swim toward the light "....and so we did. A life-changing night to be sure.Swimming through the dark I would look out toward the boat/light to get my bearings. And keep swimming. We had an amazing time and the return swim to shore with no light was indeed an act I don't see myself ever doing again. As I sat alone with Garett on May 11th I knew by his breathing that he was leaving us and he was struggling. I started telling him it was OK he could rest now. His breathing almost immediately eased. I started telling him how much his Dad and I loved him. How he had shown us so many wonderful things and how we would never forget the adventures we had with him. I asked him to remember us swimming together toward the light in the dark ocean to see the Mantas. His breaths slowed and then stopped. I continued to swim with him toward the light guiding him toward the peace I hope he has found. I recounted this so that you would understand that my use of the phrase was part of a special memory shared with our son. Thank you for being part of my healing process. c...See MoreUser
