What's your plants favorite food?
Comments (8)I feed all my plants compost, and I give "special" food to the roses - egg shells, coffee grounds, and banana peels. Everyone who walks by my house stops and smells the roses, and when I am outside, they tell me they have NEVER seen such beautiful, huge roses. My grandmother fed her roses with the same things, so just carrying on a family tradition! We drink a lot of coffee, so have plenty of grounds. I do notice that I have tons of worms around my roses, more than I see anywhere else ( and I have a lot of worms in my soil!) I have also used coffee grounds around other plants, usually when I get lots from a coffee house. Sprinkle them around anything - never seems to be a problem, and they disappear quickly. My kids joke that our plants look so good cause we have worms on speed! Probably true! My Mom used to trench compost (not what she called it back then), but put it all in the blender first, making a sludge. She would then pour it in a trench, and cover it up. A few days later, tons of worms, and very little recognizable food bits. Worked for her, just like compost piles and lasagna gardens work for me. No mice, as long as you keep the pile turned and moist. good luck! KATHY...See MoreWhats the favorite rose bush food for your rabbits.
Comments (8)I think you're right about the rabbits starving. I didn't have this problem last year. This year, all the shoots protruding from the wire-mesh cages have been pruned as far in as the rabbit can reach, and the larger canes look as if a miniature beaver has been at work. Copious amounts of droppings have been left in the snow around each bush. To add insult to injury... well, there was heavy damp snow one evening, and then the temperature plummeted, resulting in a crust of snow partially covering the bushes. Some blasted rabbit climbed UP onto the top of the mound, ate its fill, and left enormous piles of droppings right there atop Tradescant and Jude the Obscure!...See MoreFall Roses in Islamabad, zone 9b.
Comments (154)I wish I could comment on your list, Khalid, but I don't grow any of them yet. it looks interesting with many varieties I don't see many having. I suppose some day I'll have to get Evelyn since you so highly recommend it, Straw and I love fragrance .I'm seriously considering SBP. Did you mention buying yours from Burling. If so, I may just get it come Spring since it can take a while to grow from bands even though I doubt I'll have a bed for it until autumn. Thank you, LL for you critique of the Kordes roses. I got 1st Crush late in the season as a mark-down from Lowe's. I checked on it yesterday and it's STILL putting on new healthy growth as are so many of my roses! I have yet to move it to its final home, so I'm thrilled it can take some shade as I want it in an Eastern exposure bed. How long have you had yours and how tall is it getting? Is it a bushy, well-clothed plant? Ideally it will go with Heathcliff, Othello, cl., Viking Queen and Sugar Moon, but if it's tall, it could go in my new North-Easter bed with Mme, A. Carriere and Tess Cl. I also want EA, but worry about her height, also. I may wait and see if Lowe's carries her in the Spring so I can see her blooms. She's stunning though in pics....See MoreFavorite container rose food ??
Comments (36)Ben, I have alot of new roses for this year that I have planted in big pots. Some are starting to bloom [like Roald Dahl who is just covered in buds and blooms!]. How and with what do you feed your new bare roots? I have top dressed with some Mills Magic Rose Mix and would like to start supplementing but dont want to risk burning roots and would appreciate your advice. Thanks!!...See MoreBenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14)
