Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

3 adjoining spaces with different floors -unify w/lvt or wood?

Is lvt a good choice for a kitchen, extending to hall to front door? I have different floorings in kitchen, hall, then green tile by front door and wood in family room....I thought i would put something down in the kitchen extending through to the hall and front door and then leave the wood in family room....the many different floorings are a great eyesore to me...I thought this Trucor pietra crema would brighten up my life and also create consistency while still keeping the reddish warm family room wood (second photo down).

One friend said the creme shows too much dirt. Another said that wood would be a good choice and then get the family room stained the same color but the type of wood in family room cannot be stained a lighter shade i was told.

the current kitchen you see is laminate and i love the appearance but water swelled up under from a leak and i have to change it....i'm taking advantage of this opportunity to get something to flow through the house...

any advice would be taken into consideration and appreciated!! Thanks!

I also like the flooring you have in your kitchen! Given the opportunity, its a good idea to replace all flooring with one and only one floor. I prefer dark, walnut-type wood. It always comes back in style. However, good lighting is needed with darker LVP flooring. The lighter flooring samples you/ve picked aren't my cup of tea, though they are attractive. Please keep us posted!

Wow, this is all GREAT.................I am starting to come out of panic mode and seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. I really like the continuity of having ALL wood - no seams anywhere - just ALL wood across the entire bottom level - BUT - some of these ideas intrigue me as well. Would a marble or mosaic look appropriate? We are in a higher-end home and my decor is very formal, upscale vs. a cottage look, beachy, rustic, etc. A hotel that we visit frequently had some wonderful marble mosaics as part of their lobby. Wonder what that might look like as an option? Thank you, Beth, for those pictures and being part of the sane ones talking me off the ledge of craziness with this whole situation, lol. And Flo. Very wise words - it is NOT brain surgery, you are right! I have a picture of the two gouges on my phone but I don't know how well they will show up. I'll try to log on from my phone and post the gouges so you can see. COuld be they can still fix what is there. I shall know soon! IN the mean time, going to see what else I might can put in that foyer - starting with the ideas already shared :)). Another quick question since everyone here is so knowledgeable - are the engineered hardwoods of 2017 much different than the ones in 2002? In terms of durability, resistance to scratching/marks?

It is unfortunate that two brands are getting mixed up and nobody is clarifying that. All manufacturers use, China, cambodia, etc. LW Mountain has had a lot of issues when our company used them. LW Flooring which is an entirely different company has not given us any issues with their product. The one issue we did have was due to the utter disregard from the shipping company that we use. LW was quick to replace our mater that was damgeddamaged in shipping and sent us a few boxes extra just in case. LW Flooring has been a great company compared to LW Mountain.

The house is 100 years old which means the floors might be the same age. It is entirely possible that the wood has had its day. A wood floor can only be sanded/refinished so many times and then it is finished. It needs to be replaced. Before you decide on 'other' flooring for the house, PLEASE find out if there is enough wood on the EXISTING floor to get another sand/refinish. To do this, you simply need to find a cross section of the wood. This is often found around floor registers or at the floor's edge (in front of a door, or at a step, some place where you see a transition strip). Find a spot to look at the cross section and then MEASURE the amount of wood sitting ABOVE the tongue. You need a minimum of 3mm of wood to achieve a sand and refinish. The other thing I would like to point out is the wood is in rough shape...but the finish (just from the glow in the pics) looks OK. I'm wondering if the previous owners did a 'buff and coat' (adding a layer of finish rather than having a full sand and refinish). This might be because of resale or it might be because there isn't enough wood left to achieve a full sand and refinish. And is this part of the home and addition? If it is, then the age of the floor/addition might be to your advantage.

Thank you for your response! I agree that cabinet color is too pink. The photo of my wood floor is not capturing the color correctly (it looks yellow in the photo when in person it is a lighter tan color (with dark variations). I have considered and swatched many different colors (navy, olive green, mustard yellow) but ultimately wanted to bring in more light since it is north facing with no windows. I am keeping the hood vent and open shelving unpainted since they match the flooring so well and I love the earthy element. Any other color you might suggest?

HAHAHA Verbo but it solidifies what I find attractive. Wood should be stained in colors wood NATURALLY comes in. If you want gray--get stone. I find my LPV in my kitchen and dining room to be the bomb but I know if I had real wood in my living room vs the broadloom that's there, the LPV would not live up to it's neighbor. One flooring through out any area you can see from another with no doors makes the space appear expansive. Different flooring may be a decorating choice in the end chops up the space.

IMO the same wood everywhere would be best so what is the issue since the same is what you should be striving for the fact it can't be stained lighter is not an issue. I alwya laugh when people worry about dirt showing all floors get dirty and I like the ones that tell me when they are dirty.

Ha ha i know....good point...my husband said the same ..he does not want to hide the dirt and live in dirt...the reason i would not get everything to match the family room real wood is because i don't like that color to go through the kitchen and house....it is so pretty in the family room but not my choice for my cream kitchen....but maybe i'm wrong and maybe it would look awesome....then do you pull up the wood in the hall that came with the house that is thin planked and a different color and replace that? i love all of the comments......gives me a lot to think about....

rats i read that you cannot put vinyl over wood...so much for vinyl for consistency of tile...i only wanted to cover the very short section in the hall.....this chopped up look is driving me mad...

there is a hand scraped engineered darker wood i have throughout the upstairs that i absolutlely love.....wondering if i should do that but then it would be up against the family room wood....

In answer to Patricia the issue is that the family room wood is loved by us but i do not want that some color wood in the kitchen and hall of my dark shady wooded home.... i agree with consistency and want that ...exactly what i am striving for....but i need to choose something that goes in kitchen and hall that will complement the family room not compete...i am not a decorator not even near....but i am hating how the house goes from green tile by front door and turns to the thin plank wood then to my kitchen laminate then to family room honey colored wood.....i know my husband does not want to have the family room pulled up so i wonder if a darker wood for the rest of the house and adding a stain to the family room would make things flow?? otherwise a tile that is next to the family room....this is so vexing to me and not easy...

it is oak i think,....i cant remember .... i had in put in 20 years ago and cannot find any of my info on it...

back then i removed carpeting and had that put in....it never occurred to me at the time to look at the whole picture of the first floor uniformity.....

In a perfect world, how would you feel about wood everywhere? Sometimes it is just easier to start over rather to try to save something.

i would love wood eveywhere...so then i would wonder what wood would go best in kitchen high traffic areas..everywhere seems to be high traffic here....

my upstairs is Manchester solid hard wood handscraped oak and it is gorgeous and has held up with my son with special needs who gets water everywhere....so i am thinking if i can find that again it would be awesome everywhere....
