Difference between two tiles. input needed

Contractor says that Montauk Gin tile I selected from Tilebar is the same as Mallorca White. The Mallorca White came in boxes from a company called Equipe. I see a difference between my TileBar sample of Montauk Gin and Mallorca white. Am I crazy? Would love to hear from anyone that has either one of these tiles. Could they possibly be made by the same company or are they two very different tiles?

If they look different they probably are why are you asking? BTW every dye lot is different that is why when you order tile they all have to come from the same dye lot too.

@ oilpainter - regarding draining ditch, the stuff blocking was removed the day after it created flooding of my neighbors yard and mine. What i was trying to communicate was that because of the blocked storm drain the heavy rain we had and subsequent flooding was the final blow to the rotted out retainig wall that's in place. @ lehua13 - thanks for the ratio. I was thinking 2:1 closest to my house but towards the rear of the backyard i was thinking a steeper slope. Current plan is for the neighbor to kick in on the fence if that holds then I will suggest putting the fence on the top of the slope. Did you do the work yourself and how hard was it? What tools or advice can you give based on your experience? @ Audric - The only significant slope is between my backyard and my neighbors. There are other areas around his house and that sit slightly higher but not significant. The only time any significant draining from his yard has gone into mine was when we had heavy rainfall and the storm drain that sits closest to his house was blocked by construction materials which forced water into his yard and then into mine.

From everything I can tell it's mainly about having more even heat then, which I'm not sure is all that important to me. I'm not terribly dissatisfied in that regard with what I have now. It sounds like the fan runs more though and I despise that about forced air heat - that blowing noise. Would have hot water heat in a heartbeat if I could. So I may not care for it because of the blowing even if I didn't mind paying more for it. Good to know about the need for appropriate thermostat. The proposal indicates some thermostat that's "included". I was thinking I don't need a new one but if I need one that is right for the furnace then I'll do that.

Your stair treads appear to be stained. Simply sand them and then refinish them in a natural finish. Be aware that the stair treads MAY BE red oak (which is CHEAPER than white oak). If they are white oak, a natural clear coat (water based polyurethane) will NOT amber or turn a deep orange. I think this has happened to the stairs...or they have a medium stain added. It is hard to tell from your photos. Please add a close up of a stair tread. Please try to photograph a step with the bamboo showing as well as a tread with the upstairs oak showing. That way we can see what is happening. Normally you try to match the stair tread with the PUBLIC area flooring - which I'm assuming is the bamboo. The private areas (normally the upstairs where the bedrooms exist) are stand-alone areas and do not need a match to the stairs.

If you have Brazilian cherry on first floor, you do the tread as same as first floor. Cherry....stain....... As to second floor: I'd get an engineered hardwood and closely match first floor, rather than do the fad.

There is no "same"

If I had selected a tile I would want that tile and if an alternative was suggested then I would research very carefully in terms of specs and reviews before agreeing.

Which one do you prefer? I am assuming that it is theoretically a white tile but there are thousands and thousands of white tiles and each one looks different.

Not to mention that every "lot" of tile will look slightly different which is why you need to order ample tile including a percentage over what is theoretically needed.

Your contractor's trying to put something over on you -- I assume his choice is cheaper? Otherwise I can't see why he'd care.

Echoing others' sentiments: Definitely put a bit of effort into making sure your tile is all identical /all from the same lot. The difference may not show up while you're looking at it in the boxes, but it will definitely show up in your finished project ... especially when the morning light pours in.

I am having the same exact issue. The Montauk Gin sample I received from Tilebar says "semi-polished" on the sticker on the back and it has much more of a sheen. I ordered the Amagansett Gin from Home Depot and it has a definite matte finish. They both have "Mallorca White Made in Spain' on the back of the tile but have slightly different UPC codes. I'm afraid Semi-Polished isn't available anymore because now both the Home Depot and Tilebar websites list the tile as "Satin."

Why does your contractor care which tile you select? Get what you want in the quantities you need and don't accept substitutes for all the reasons others have explained about finishes and production lots.
