Can you post a couple more pictures of the room from different angles so we can get a better idea of what the whole room looks like?

@kandrewspa @jck910 yes here's some more pics. The edge of the carpet to the fireplace is ~10', and the length from the back wall to the shortest part of the carpet (before it angles out further at the corner) is 112". I have about 3' on the other side of the ottoman to the front wall with the large window.

Is it weird to put a rug on carpet? I just feel like it will help make this room look better but not sure. And also not sure if I should have the entire couch under it, or just the front half. I'm thinking just the front half since the back half covers the entire carpet until the fireplace area. Hope this makes sense haha.

So no flooring under the carpet? Any chance you would replace the carpet with the same flooring? The sectional would be better centered on the window

What's driving the placement of the sofa? It has its back to the fireplace and it doesn't look like it's facing a TV unless there is one somewhere not in one of the pictures. You can put an area rug on a carpet, but I'm not sure if that is going to be the answer for you. The sofa is a nice contrasting color with the carpet. It is odd the way the carpet is only on part of the floor in the room, but it's not the first time I've seen this. Do you have funds to maybe buy two chairs to balance the room with more furnishings? Do you have a need for window coverings?

@jck910 that would be ideal but we don't plan on replacing anytime soon - we want to get new floors eventually so plan on getting rid of the carpet then. We also have our kitchen table area right behind the couch (no kitchen table yet, we just moved in & are slowly furnishing). The layout in here is small and a weird shape so hard to work with. I wish I could move the couch under the window but it will probably look even more weird haha

@kandrewspa the placement was due to the carpet and because the small area of hardwood floor that we have behind it is for a kitchen table. The two doors you see in the photo go out to the sunroom. And yes there's a tv! See photo. I agree about the contrast with the carpet and the couch, which i like and don't want to make the room look worse if I add a rug lol!

And yes! I was thinking of either 1 or two accent chairs. We also plan on getting roman shades for the windows, which I'm hoping will help bring the room together more too. Not sure what color to get for those - was thinking just a linen/beige type color. (Ignore the stuff under the TV! I plan on getting a bench to put the wifi box and we'll be hiding the tv cord!)

I would not add a rug on top of the carpet. et some tall curtains on the windows behind the sectional, that will create a more finished look.

Is the space shown the only dining area in your home?

I would rotate the sectional so the corner of it is at the left foreground. You don't need a rug with this carpet.

If that is a wood burning stove, then your combustible sectional and ottoman need to be at least 3 feet away from the stove. It's hard to tell from the photos, but they appear closer than that. The plants will also suffer if they are kept next to the stove while when it is in use.

That carpet is a pretty thick frieze pile, and an area rug is not going to lie very well on it. It will creep around and have bumps in it.

You have to bite the bullet with this carpet until you can afford to pull it up and redo the floors.

Luckily, your couch is a great color. Maybe some fun pillows in complementary fabrics can pull together the burgundy and beige.

A rug on top of carpeting, as @Palimpsest said, will bunch up and be a tripping hazard.

TV needs a tweak to really be viewable. How large is it?

Would this work and not be too close to TV? Right now it looks too far away, but size matters...

@decoenthusiaste HMM it could work, but then couch wouldn't be facing tv. Right now it's a good view from the couch - it's an 82" so pretty large. We're about 12'-13' away from screen when sitting on the couch where it is currently.

I'm kind of wishing I got a smaller couch, or maybe two smaller couches but too late now haha. Will have to work with what we have. :)

Can you turn the sofa so the corner is over the weirdly shaped corner of the carpet - so it is facing the stove?

I might try some unconvetional placements to see if they might work. Since the furniture cannot be balanced by centering under the windows anyway, maybe this could work. What if you pull the sectional a bit forward (ignoring the woodstove except to make sure it’s far enough away) and turn it on the diagonal like these rooms. You might be anle to provide some balance with a sofa table behind on the right side.

All the curtains or throw pillows in the world aren’t going to hide the fact that you are trying to force this room to focus on the tv in the hallway (and that is a hallway) instead of focusing on the windows and fireplace. Is there any other room you can move the tv to?

Why do you want a rug under the sectional? The carpet as it is is an odd island the previous owners designed for you. Don't compound their error. Sorry but you need to start all over. That sectional in that space are not a functional match. As it sits right now you cannot light that stove!!! You need to get a low TV credenza place it in front of the window to the right of the fireplace then re-orientate the seating to face both, creating a hall /pony wall with the sectional back--if you keep it in that room. People get all worked up about TVs in front of windows but it works quite well in our family room. The lattice on the upper windows--what's that about?

@AiFL no, there is no where else to put the tv and i really dont want to put an 82” tv in front of the windows. the design of the living room is pretty stupid but working with what we have. yes - i guess that technically is a hallway but we never walk through it because we always come in the side door by the garage.

@arcy_gw my original post was just wondering if a rug would look good under this area. yes i understand the layout sucks, but as i mentioned in a previous comment i dont want to put our 82” tv in front of the windows (will have to buy a tv stand, fill holes where tv is mounted, paint etc...). I also mentioned in another comment that we plan on rotating the sectional when/if we use the wood burning stove in the winter so the ottoman and edge piece are not next to the fire. the lattice (which we hate lol) in the upper windows was here when we bought the house and we plan on taking it off.

@Sammie J Yes - we were planning on doing that in the winter anyways when we use the fireplace, so I'll try moving the long edge on that side and see how it looks. Thanks!

@Olychick hmm interesting! I might try, but then the back of the couch will be in front of the stove. As others mentioned, we should probably have the tv in front of the windows and face the couch the other way. But we've already mounted the TV and that would require a tv stand, which I don't really want to do. Trying to work with what we have without spending too much more money. Here’s another option, but then the couch hangs over that weird edge slightly (ottoman is still close to fireplace but can be moved wherever - just put it there for now)

Both new layouts are better than the original. Only one keeps the tv where it is. The fact that the sofa hangs off the carpet a little doesn’t matter. Didn’t notice till you said so.

FYI - you can put a big piece of artwork over the holes that will be left behind if/when you move the tv. Then you can spackle and paint whenever…. 😊

@RedRyder thanks I agree. I should have consulted this group before hanging the tv. My bf asked me about a million times if I was sure before he mounted it lol! We will probably keep it as shown in the second option I sent so we won't have to move the tv for now. Plus once we re-do the floors one day, that area will no longer be a hallway as someone else mentioned.

The rearranged sofa that faces the tv is a good option. I’m glad you got help here for this problem. When you’re ready to do the floors, let us know! We will be cheering you on.

I would not move the tv. The arrangement facing the window is never going to allow you to have the tv far enough away for comfortable viewing - plus it will be off to the side.

I can't tell what you did in the other new arrangement (could you post pics of it from the front?) but it looks good from the pic you posted.
