Design Dilemma Basements Windows

What should we do for window coverings in this room? It’s our basement rec room. We have light filtering shades upstairs but held off down here as room mostly used at night. Now that kids want to be down here more we need something. What can we do on French doors?

I wish I had done powered shades in our basement. We did cellular blackout, as we have our theater space down there and need it dark for that experience. And they never get opened during the day unless we make an effort to open them. If I remember you have bedrooms down there, so maybe that's less of an issue for you.

You can get shades that will clip into the bottom for doors so they don't bang when the doors are used. Our cellular shades clip in at the bottom of our basement door.

We just have a guest room. The room is primarily used by kids as a play space or to hang out with friends. Most of the time the blinds would be open but sometimes the sun shines right in.

If the floor is too bad, you may want to consider using "sand mix" to level it. You must clean the floor as much as possible, removing old vinyl, adhesive and paint as humanly possible. Then you brush a mix of fortifier and Portland cement(commonly called moose milk). Then trowel out the sand mix to level it off. You could also use a standard floor leveler if the deviations aren't too bad (I think it's good within 1 1/2 inches, but check manufacturers directions). With the laminate, I have seen a lot of systems over the years that say they will stand up to moisture, but haven't done so well. I haven't seen the Delta-FL system over a long period of time, so I can't say whether it will last or not. There are several advantages to laminate though... -It's cheap -Quick and easy to install -Generally very ware resistant other than harsh abrasion and moisture I have laid it in a few daycares, etc... and it seams to hold up pretty well, as long as you can keep the moisture, and any sandy soils off of it. It is recommended to glue the joints on many systems if moisture is a concern.

To cover or not to cover exposed insulation in basement utility room

Good luck. I hope you find a solution. I do put one of my two cats downstairs but I physically caught him eating the insulation on multiple occasions so I obviously try not to do it for too long now but now that I am doing renovations upstairs and I am also doing partial renovations downstairs he's going to have to go there more often because I need to put him somewhere and there are other issues with other rooms. I guess I will just have to pull out all the insulation as I cannot do a drop ceiling (you will see in another long post that is one of the things the town has told me will make my basement "finished" and they will re-assess my taxes. I have no idea how much he ate before I realized what he was doing UGGHHH. I took in my ex-husband's cat almost 2 yrs ago when his house was destroyed by fire and the two cats hate each other even though I introduced very slowly and did everything by the book so it makes it more challenging trying to separate them and keep mine out of the basement (my house is NOT big). I guess it will just be easier to take down all the insulation but it's fairly old and nasty too so it won't be a very pleasant task.

Oh, ok then. If you want blackout, the cellular blackout work well for us. If you aren't concerned about that then I would do light filtering as well. If you like the idea of automatic shades I recommend that. I would've liked automatic as I like having ours closed at night and sometimes they don't GET closed so I have to go down there at night to close them.

Get solar shades they cut the heat and the UV but let you keep the view.

We have solar upstairs but keep up unless sun on them. Need to figure out the French doors thougu

The blinds on our door are outside mount. they fit behind the door handle when lowered and have a clip on the bottom to keep them in place. I'm sure whatever particular window treatment you want would work similarly. The only ones that probably don't are large format cellular or wood blinds.

Blinds have been ordered. We shall see. Went with blackout ad cheaper and will only be down when sun in room.
