How to Rid a Space of Bermuda Grass?

Hello,

We have a 32’ (l) x 10’ (w) strip of Bermuda Grass that I would like removed to put 3 Eastern Red Cedars in the space. What is an effective way to get rid of lawn in that space? I have an adversion to cardboard on the ground as I put it down at a previous home and found termites in the area a few months later.

We also are trying to put metal edging around new trees to keep the Bermuda Grass out, but have not found the tool that can dig into the lawn to create the pocket for the edging… We used one of those straight edge shovels and a trenching shovel, are not hitting rocks, but have had no success. Any suggestions?

Lynn
