How to prep outdoor wood for indoor decor?

kelli_ga
last year

I have a wood burning fireplace, but I don’t plan to use it in the near term. I want to clean it and put some decorative logs inside.

There is plenty of wood on the property, and lots of pine cones. I have heard that unprocessed wood might have critters in it. What should I do to the wood to make sure I don’t introduce bugs into the house? (There are a lot of bugs outside, and since I am relatively new to the area, they freak me out a little.)

I plan to use a chainsaw to create the logs, but I am not too excited about using an axe to split them. I will probably cut logs of varying diameters to create the arrangement.

What about pine cones? How do you make those clean and bug free? (I can skip the pine cones if they are a pain.)

Thanks!
